The Chennai Super Kings' final home match of IPL 2026 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad has ignited widespread speculation about a potential surprise appearance by MS Dhoni. However, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has firmly dismissed such expectations.
Dhoni's Absence This Season
MS Dhoni has not played a single game in this IPL season. Before the tournament, CSK confirmed that Dhoni was recovering from a calf strain. What was initially seen as a short rehabilitation period has extended through the entire league stage, keeping him out of all CSK fixtures.
Emotional Narrative Intensifies
With CSK playing their last home game at Chepauk and still in contention for the playoffs, the emotional desire for a Dhoni appearance has grown. This is further fueled by a remark Dhoni made in 2021, hinting that his final T20 might come in Chennai.
However, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has strongly advised against expecting Dhoni to return for this crucial match. Speaking on JioStar, Gavaskar said, "The match against SRH is a crucial one for CSK. It's their last home game at Chepauk, so naturally fans want to see MS Dhoni play." He quickly added, "But he hasn't featured at all this season. In fact, he hasn't played competitive cricket for over a year. So, I doubt he would want to take such a risk at this stage."
Match Readiness is Key
Gavaskar emphasized the importance of match readiness, stating, "You need players who have been match-fit and playing regularly for the last six weeks." He also highlighted Dhoni's team-first mentality: "Dhoni is a complete team-man. I don't think he would want to disrupt the current combination."
Concluding his view, Gavaskar made his stance clear: "I would be very surprised if he plays against SRH. This is a must-win game for CSK. A victory keeps them alive in the playoff race. They have to win this match at all costs, and bringing in a player who hasn't played in over a year could be a gamble."
CSK's Playoff Equation
CSK's path to the playoffs is straightforward but challenging. Winning their final two matches would take them to 16 points, keeping them in contention, though qualification would also depend on other results. For now, Gavaskar's assessment makes it clear: despite the emotional appeal, a Dhoni return at Chepauk appears highly unlikely.
