In a move mirroring recent domestic fixtures featuring star players, Indian captain Shubman Gill's upcoming return to domestic cricket will be a quiet affair. His first match since being omitted from India's T20 World Cup squad will be played behind closed doors, with no fans permitted in the stands.
Security and Logistics Dictate Closed-Door Fixture
Gill is set to represent Punjab in their Vijay Hazare Trophy encounter against Sikkim on Saturday, January 3. The match will be held at the Jaipuria College ground. However, following BCCI guidelines and due to specific security concerns, the general public will not be allowed entry to watch the game live.
A BCCI source clarified the decision, stating that only individuals directly associated with the college will be granted access to the premises. "The students and staff are allowed inside the premises but there will be enough security arrangements including private bouncers being deployed. In any case, no outsiders will be allowed inside the college premises," the source told PTI. The primary reasons cited are security protocols and a lack of proper spectator seating arrangements at the venue.
No Live Broadcast for Fans
Similar to the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy matches featuring Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, this game will also not be available for fans to follow via live broadcast. There will be no live television coverage or online streaming of the Punjab vs Sikkim clash. This means fans will have no visual access to Gill's highly anticipated domestic comeback.
Gill, along with India pacer Arshdeep Singh, has been instructed by the BCCI to feature in Punjab's next two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. After facing Sikkim, Punjab will take on Goa on January 6 at the KL Saini Stadium.
Travel Plans Hit by Weather
The arrival of the two international stars to the venue was also delayed. Both Gill and Arshdeep were scheduled to reach by Friday evening, but poor weather conditions across North India disrupted their flight plans. Weather permitting, they are now expected to arrive late on Friday night, according to the source.
While this makes Gill's return a low-key event for supporters, his presence remains crucial for the Punjab team. His experience and form will be vital as they continue their campaign in the prestigious domestic 50-over tournament. The match represents a significant opportunity for Gill to find his rhythm and make a strong statement with the bat following his recent exclusion from the national T20 squad.
