Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur on Saturday reaffirmed the state government's commitment to engaging youth in sports and education, highlighting ongoing efforts to bolster sports infrastructure and enhance facilities for athletes.
Thakur made the remarks while presiding over a volleyball tournament organized by a local youth organization at Batal village in the Jubbal-Nawar-Kotkhai Assembly constituency.
Sports and Education Key to Youth Development
Addressing the gathering, the minister emphasized that sports, alongside education, are crucial for the holistic development of young people. "Volleyball is a very popular sport in the mountainous regions. Sports activities not only teach youth discipline, leadership and team spirit but also help keep them away from social evils such as drug addiction. Regular organisation of such competitions is essential for building a healthy and strong society," he said.
Increased Diet Allowance and Honors for Athletes
Thakur announced that the government has increased the diet allowance for athletes from Rs 120 to Rs 220 per day. "Furthermore, arrangements have been made to honour athletes who excel at national and international levels," he added. This move is expected to provide better nutrition and motivation for sportspersons across the state.
New Sports School and Training Facilities
The minister highlighted the establishment of Thakur Ramlal Government Girls Sports School in Jubbal as a significant achievement. He said training facilities in eight sports disciplines, including volleyball, are being provided at the institution. "The Cabinet recently approved 32 new posts for the better functioning of the sports hostel," he added, aiming to improve coaching and administrative support.
Development Works in Constituency
Speaking about development in the Jubbal-Nawar-Kotkhai constituency, Thakur said the state government is committed to balanced and comprehensive development. "Over the past three years, the Jubbal-Nawar-Kotkhai Assembly constituency has set new benchmarks in development. Projects worth crores of rupees have either been completed or are progressing rapidly in various areas. Around 181 new roads have been constructed or approved in the constituency," he stated.
Incentive for Local Youth Organization
On the occasion, the Education Minister also announced an incentive of Rs 50,000 for the local youth organization to encourage and promote sports activities. This financial support is aimed at fostering grassroots sports development in the region.
