BJP Leader R Ashoka Accuses Congress of Issuing PRCs to Illegal Migrants
BJP leader and former Karnataka minister R Ashoka has strongly criticized the state's Congress government for issuing Permanent Residence Certificates (PRCs) to illegal migrants, alleging that the move is aimed at securing votes. He urged the government to immediately withdraw the decision, calling it unconstitutional.
Speaking to reporters in Mysuru on 11 July 2026, Ashoka stated that the issuance of PRCs to individuals who have entered the state illegally undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent. He claimed that the Congress party is using this as a strategy to garner political support from migrant communities ahead of upcoming elections.
Unconstitutional Move, Says Ashoka
Ashoka emphasized that providing PRCs to illegal migrants violates constitutional norms and could lead to long-term demographic and security issues. He demanded that the Karnataka government revoke all such certificates issued to non-citizens and adhere to proper legal procedures for residency documentation.
According to Ashoka, the Congress government's action is a clear abuse of power and an attempt to manipulate voter demographics. He warned that this could have serious implications for the state's governance and social harmony.
Government Response Awaited
The Karnataka government has not yet officially responded to Ashoka's allegations. However, sources within the Congress party have dismissed the claims, stating that PRCs are issued only to eligible residents as per existing laws.
Political analysts note that the issue is likely to intensify ahead of the next assembly elections, with both parties using it to mobilize their support bases. The controversy also highlights ongoing debates about immigration and citizenship policies in the state.
