IAF Honours 1965 & 1971 War Veteran Zahiruddin Saiyed with Guard of Honour in Vadodara
IAF gives guard of honour to ex-corporal, 1965 & 1971 war veteran

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Monday paid solemn and respectful tributes to one of its distinguished veterans, retired Corporal Zahiruddin Fakhruddin Saiyed, who passed away at his home in Vadodara. The 78-year-old ex-serviceman, who bravely served during the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan wars, succumbed to a prolonged age-related illness.

A Final Salute for a Valiant Air Warrior

As the family of the late veteran made preparations for his final journey and burial rites, a contingent of IAF personnel arrived at his residence in the Tandalja area. There, they performed a formal and poignant ceremonial guard of honour, a military tradition reserved for those who have served the nation with distinction. The ceremony drew a large gathering of neighbours and local residents, who assembled to pay their last respects to the respected community member and war hero.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice

Zahiruddin Saiyed's life was marked by unwavering dedication to the nation. After his commendable service in the Air Force during two critical wars, he continued his career in public service. Following his retirement from the IAF, he joined Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) as a sub-divisional engineer. His family, in a statement, remembered him as a proud ex-serviceman whose courage, honesty, and patriotism were a source of immense pride for them and the country.

His chest was adorned with several medals that bore testimony to his bravery and long service:

  • Paschimi Star for his role in the 1971 war.
  • Samanvya Seva Medal for service during the 1965 war.
  • Sangram Medal, instituted in 1973 for 1971 war veterans.
  • 25th Independence Anniversary Medal in 1972.
  • Raksha Medal for participation in the 1965 war.
  • A medal for long service.

A Legacy of Discipline and Dedication

The guard of honour, as stated by his grieving family, was not just a protocol but a profound recognition of his tireless dedication and service to India. They expressed that the late Zahiruddin Saiyed would forever be remembered as a disciplined soldier, a sincere public servant, and a guiding mentor within his family. The dual ceremonies—the official military tribute and the heartfelt gathering of his community—painted a complete picture of a man honoured both by the institution he served and the people he lived among.

The event underscores the IAF's enduring tradition of honouring its retired personnel, ensuring that the sacrifices and contributions of veterans like Corporal Saiyed are never forgotten. His passing marks the loss of a direct link to a pivotal era in India's military history.
