Atherton: India Cricket Team Poised to Hold All ICC White-Ball Trophies Simultaneously
India Cricket Team Could Hold All ICC White-Ball Trophies

Former England Captain Michael Atherton Hails India as Cricket's White-Ball Powerhouse

Former England cricket captain Michael Atherton has emphatically declared the India national cricket team as the leading force in limited-overs cricket globally. In a recent analysis, Atherton stated that India's recent dominance positions them strongly to potentially hold all three ICC white-ball trophies simultaneously, an unprecedented achievement in the sport.

India's Record-Breaking T20 World Cup Victory

India reinforced their status as cricket's premier white-ball side by defeating the New Zealand national cricket team by a commanding 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup on Sunday. This victory secured a record third T20 World Cup title for India and made them the first team in history to successfully defend the championship. Additionally, it marked the first occasion where a team lifted the trophy on their home soil, adding another historic milestone to their achievement.

Atherton's Analysis of India's White-Ball Dominance

Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket, Atherton emphasized that India's excellence extends far beyond just the T20 format, reflecting their broader supremacy in white-ball cricket overall. "India are more than a pre-eminent T20 side. They are the pre-eminent white-ball side at the moment," Atherton declared unequivocally.

He pointed to India's remarkable record across recent ICC tournaments to substantiate his claim. "In the last few ICC global events, before today, they have won 30 out of 32 games. They have only been beaten in the final of the 50-over World Cup here by Australia, and that game by South Africa earlier in this tournament," Atherton explained. "Across the board in white-ball cricket, they are the pre-eminent side. They were the strongest side here and deserve their victory," he added.

India's Unbeaten Run in ICC Tournaments

India's dominant streak in ICC limited-overs competitions began during the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where they won every single match before suffering a heartbreaking loss to the Australia national cricket team in the final. The team then maintained their formidable form by going through the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup completely unbeaten. This was followed by another flawless campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, showcasing their consistency across different formats and tournaments.

Their only minor setback during the latest T20 World Cup came against the South Africa national cricket team during the Super Eight stage, but this did little to derail their overall momentum.

The Potential for Historic Trophy Collection

With another Cricket World Cup scheduled for next year, Atherton believes India now have a realistic opportunity to hold every ICC limited-overs trophy at the same time. "They may well mop it all up, there is a 50-over World Cup next year, and they have the chance now to hold the Champions Trophy, T20 World Cup, and the 50-over World Cup all in one go, and that will surely be their aim," Atherton predicted.

Nasser Hussain on India's Winning Formula

Another former England captain, Nasser Hussain, offered insights into what makes India's cricket team so consistently successful. According to Hussain, India employs a simple yet highly effective formula that makes them extremely difficult to defeat.

"India's formula is pretty simple. A batting lineup full of powerful hitters that will get you an above par score and a bowler in Bumrah, who makes a below par score probably enough. He's an absolute genius, and when you combine those two elements, they're virtually unbeatable," Hussain elaborated.

This combination of an aggressive batting order packed with power-hitters and the brilliance of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah creates a formidable team dynamic that has proven successful across multiple tournaments and conditions.
