The senior men's selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to convene on May 19 to finalize India's squads for the upcoming home series against Afghanistan, which includes a one-off Test and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in June. The development was confirmed by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia, who informed the Times of India that the committee will meet after the Indian Premier League (IPL) to select the teams.
Meeting Venue and Preparatory Discussions
While Mumbai is a likely venue for the meeting, sources have indicated that Guwahati or another city could also host the selection committee. An online discussion has not been ruled out either. Ahead of the formal sitting, the selectors are expected to hold an informal virtual interaction on May 17 to deliberate on a few targeted names, particularly among emerging pacers who have impressed in recent months.
Series Schedule
The one-off Test match will be played from June 6 to 10 in New Chandigarh. The three ODIs are scheduled for June 14 in Dharamshala, June 17 in Lucknow, and June 20 in Chennai. Shubman Gill is expected to lead both the Test and ODI sides.
Key Focus Areas
The primary focus of the selection meeting is expected to be on managing the workload of India's premier fast bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, after a demanding IPL season. There has been speculation that some senior players could be rested, given that the one-off Test is not part of the World Test Championship cycle. As of now, no player has formally sought a break, but discussions around workload management are likely to feature prominently.
Wicketkeeper Slot Uncertainty
In the white-ball setup, there is also some uncertainty regarding the wicketkeeper's position. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant's place in the ODI side has come under scrutiny, with Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan pushing their claims after consistent performances. However, KL Rahul is set to continue as the first-choice keeper-batter.
Afghanistan's Preparation
The Afghanistan series will mark the beginning of a new phase for the visiting side under head coach Richard Pybus. In preparation for the tour, Afghanistan is holding a high-performance camp in Kabul. However, their build-up has been less than ideal, with a scheduled white-ball series against Sri Lanka in the UAE in March postponed due to the Iran conflict.
