India's SAFF Women's Championship 2026 Group Draw Announced in Dhaka
The draw for the SAFF Women's Championship 2026 was conducted on Wednesday at the SAFF Secretariat in Dhaka, Bangladesh, setting the stage for an exciting tournament to be hosted in Goa from May 25 to June 7. India, the defending champions from the 2016 edition, have been placed in Group B alongside Bangladesh and Maldives, promising competitive matches as teams vie for regional supremacy.
Group Compositions and Tournament Format Details
Group A features Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, creating a balanced lineup across both groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, ensuring a thrilling knockout phase. However, SAFF has contingency plans in place: if any of the six participating teams withdraw or if Nepal faces a FIFA ban, the tournament will proceed with the remaining five teams under a round-robin format. In this scenario, each team will play once against the others, and the team accumulating the highest points will be crowned champions, maintaining the competition's integrity regardless of participant changes.
Historical Context and Seeding Based on FIFA Rankings
This marks the second time India will host the SAFF Women's Championship, following the 2016 edition in Siliguri, West Bengal, where the Blue Tigresses secured their fourth title. Goa also has prior experience, having staged the men's championship in 1999 at Fatorda, where India triumphed over Bangladesh in the final. The seeding for the draw was meticulously done according to the latest FIFA women's world rankings released on April 21. India, ranked 69th, and Nepal, ranked 87th, were placed in Pot 1. Bangladesh (112th) and Sri Lanka (162nd) occupied Pot 2, while Bhutan (164th) and Maldives (167th) were in Pot 3, ensuring a fair distribution based on current football standings.
FIFA Women's Development Programme: India's Inclusion and Impact
In a significant boost for women's football in the country, India has been selected as one of 12 nations for the FIFA Women's Development Programme (Commercial Strategy 2026). This initiative includes powerhouses like Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Scotland, Canada, Mexico, Finland, Ghana, Jordan, Lithuania, and Paraguay. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) deputy secretary general, M Satyanarayan, expressed enthusiasm, stating, "This is the perfect time for us to grow the commercial aspect of women's football in India." He highlighted the qualification of three Indian women's teams for AFC Asian Cups and the success of the ASMITA U13 Women's Football League as foundational achievements.
India's inclusion was confirmed by FIFA after the AIFF submitted an initial application and presented a detailed commercial strategy and future plans. The programme, scheduled to run online from May to October 2026, will be tailored by FIFA to benefit various stakeholders in women's football across India. Satyanarayan added, "Now that the clubs will receive this kind of capacity building on developing commercial strategies, securing sponsorships, engaging fans, and much more, the whole ecosystem will benefit." This initiative aligns with upcoming AFC club licensing requirements for IWL clubs, poised to enhance the sport's professional landscape in the region.
