IPL 2026 Final: RCB vs GT in a 50-50 Affair, Says Sehwag
IPL 2026 Final: RCB vs GT a 50-50 Contest, Says Sehwag

The defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to take on the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the highly anticipated final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, scheduled to be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Both teams, which finished the league stage in the top two positions, are eager to secure their second IPL title. RCB, who won their maiden championship last year, will face GT, the 2022 champions, in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Sehwag's Assessment: A Balanced Contest

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, speaking on Cricbuzz's preview show, described the final as a closely contested affair. According to Sehwag, the match is a 'straight 50-50' with no clear favorites. He praised RCB's exceptional cricket throughout the season, noting their consistent performances. However, he acknowledged GT's strength, especially at their home ground, where they have won five out of seven league matches. Sehwag emphasized that the pitch preparation for the final will be handled by BCCI curators, eliminating any home advantage for GT.

Path to the Final

RCB and GT faced each other in Qualifier 1, where RCB delivered a dominant performance, winning by 92 runs. RCB posted a massive total of 264 runs and then bowled out GT for just 164. GT, however, bounced back strongly in Qualifier 2, led by captain Shubman Gill's brilliant century (104 runs). They chased down a target of 215 runs against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in just 18.3 overs, securing a seven-wicket victory. RCB now aim to become only the third team after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to win back-to-back IPL titles.

Key Challenges for GT

Sehwag warned that GT must maintain the momentum from their Qualifier 2 performance to overcome RCB's lethal lineup. RCB have been clinical in both batting and bowling throughout the season. GT will need to replicate their disciplined approach from the previous match to counter RCB's strength. The former opener also pointed out that GT cannot afford to let their guard down against a team that has been exceptional in all departments.

Home Ground Memories

Both teams have fond memories of the Narendra Modi Stadium. RCB defeated Punjab Kings at this venue to win their first IPL title last year, while GT beat RR to claim the 2022 title in their debut season. RCB enter the final with a slight advantage, having had more rest and the confidence of being defending champions.
