IPL Match in Bengaluru Marred by Mobile Phone Thefts, Police Investigate Suspects

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) last Saturday, a distressing incident unfolded as numerous spectators reported the loss of their mobile phones. Initial estimates suggest at least 25 phones were stolen, casting a shadow over the high-energy sporting event.

Police Clarify Details Amid Conflicting Reports

Authorities have stepped in to provide clarity, noting that it is not confirmed whether all the phones were stolen inside the stadium. Joint commissioner of police (west) C Vamsi Krishna explained, "It is not correct to generalise that the phones were lost inside the stadium. That is based on where victims realise the loss. It may have occurred inside or outside the venue." He added that investigations are ongoing, with FIRs being registered for all e-lost reports, and assured that no one would be spared if theft is confirmed.

Victim Accounts Highlight Security Concerns

One of the affected individuals, Ritu Tiwary, a digital creator, shared her experience on Instagram. She stated that her husband's phone was stolen from the P3 stand, and she estimated that 50 to 60 phones were taken from that area alone. Tiwary described the ordeal, saying, "My husband realised his phone was missing after the first innings when he went to get us some drinking water. We approached the stadium police for help, but they were least interested." She later filed an FIR at the police station, where many others had similar complaints.

Tiwary expressed concerns about organised crime, citing similar incidents at Chennai and Wankhede stadiums. "I think this is an organised crime because, when I searched online, similar incidents were reported elsewhere. These incidents mostly happen during the second innings, when people step out for refreshments," she added, calling for stricter action and enhanced security measures to prevent future occurrences.

Minors Detained as Suspects in Ongoing Probe

Police have identified at least seven suspects, all of whom are minors, and are currently interrogating them. A senior officer clarified, "We cannot confirm they are accused yet; they are only suspects. No one was allowed inside the stadium without a valid ticket." The minors are being held at a reformation centre while the investigation proceeds.

Another officer addressed the accuracy of Tiwary's claims, stating, "The numbers mentioned by Tiwary may not be accurate, and the claims about minors being caught are also under verification. All the statements made by Tiwary and others are part of the ongoing investigation." He further noted that during large gatherings, such incidents are common, and victims often report losses based on where they realise them, not necessarily where they occurred.

Broader Implications and Calls for Improved Security

This incident has raised questions about security protocols at major sporting events like the IPL. Authorities emphasise that it is premature to draw conclusions, as the investigation is still piecing together the sequence of events. However, the reports have sparked discussions on the need for better surveillance and crowd management to safeguard spectators' belongings.

As the probe continues, police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The outcome of this investigation could lead to enhanced measures for upcoming matches, ensuring a safer environment for all attendees.
