Heinrich Malan has stepped down as head coach of the Ireland men's cricket team, just days after overseeing a stunning T20I series victory over India. The 42-year-old South African, who took charge in 2022, announced his resignation on Thursday, citing personal reasons and a desire to pursue a new challenge.
Historic Win Precedes Departure
Under Malan's guidance, Ireland registered a memorable 2-1 T20I series win against India in June 2026, their first-ever bilateral series victory over a full-member nation. The series, played in Dublin, saw Ireland win the opening match by 4 runs and the decider by 6 wickets, with the middle game being washed out.
Malan's tenure saw Ireland achieve several milestones, including their first Test win against Afghanistan in 2024 and qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He leaves with a record of 12 wins in 30 T20Is, 4 wins in 10 ODIs, and 1 win in 3 Tests.
Reasons for Resignation
In a statement, Malan said, "It has been an honour to serve as head coach of Ireland. The recent series win against India was a highlight, but I feel the time is right for me to step away and allow someone else to build on this momentum. I am grateful to the players and staff for their support."
Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom thanked Malan for his contributions, saying, "Heinrich leaves with our best wishes. His work has laid a strong foundation for the future."
Search for Successor Begins
Cricket Ireland has begun the process of finding a new head coach, with the team's next assignment being a tour to Zimbabwe in July 2026. Assistant coach Ryan Eagleson will take interim charge.
