Cricket World Mourns the Loss of Visionary Administrator IS Bindra

The cricketing community is in mourning following the passing of former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Inderjit Singh Bindra, popularly known as IS Bindra. The veteran administrator, who played an instrumental role in shaping modern Indian cricket, passed away at his residence on Sunday at the age of 84.

Prof Ratnakar Shetty's Heartfelt Tribute to a Cricket Luminary

Veteran cricket administrator Prof Ratnakar Shetty, who served as the Chief Administrative Officer of the BCCI for nearly 15 years until his retirement in 2018, paid rich tributes to Bindra. "Sad to get the news that IS Bindra is no more. He was one of the top cricket administrators that the BCCI was lucky to have," Shetty told TOI on Monday.

Shetty emphasized Bindra's crucial contributions to fostering strong relationships within the Asian Cricket Council. "Bindraji and (Jagmohan) Dalmiyaji were responsible for the strong ties between the cricket boards of the Asian Cricket Council when it was formed," he recalled.

Architect of World Cup Success and Media Rights Victory

Bindra's administrative genius was particularly evident in his handling of major international tournaments. Shetty highlighted his pivotal role in the successful staging of the Cricket World Cup in the sub-continent in 1987 and 1996, where he ensured seamless coordination among host countries. The former BCCI president also led the comprehensive documentation process for CWC 2011.

Perhaps one of Bindra's most significant legacies was his leadership in the BCCI's landmark legal battle. "BCCI will always be indebted to Bindraji for the fight against the government which led to the Supreme Court order that cricket matches played in India are the property of BCCI," Shetty stated. This historic judgment ended Prasar Bharati's monopoly, requiring them to bid for telecast rights like any other media organization.

Visionary Behind IPL and Mentor to Cricket Leaders

Bindra's forward-thinking approach extended to the creation of one of cricket's most revolutionary tournaments. Shetty credited him with playing a key role in the launch of the Indian Premier League in 2008, where he provided crucial guidance to Lalit Modi during the league's formative years.

His mentorship extended beyond Indian shores, as he guided Sharad Pawar during his tenure as ICC Chairman, serving as an advisor appointed by the International Cricket Council.

Enduring Legacy in Punjab and Beyond

Bindra's contributions to regional cricket development were equally remarkable. His dedication to Punjab cricket was so profound that the Punjab Cricket Association decided to name their stadium after him, ensuring his legacy would inspire future generations.

Shetty, who had the privilege of working closely with Bindra for many years, concluded his tribute with heartfelt words: "I was fortunate to have worked with Bindraji for a number of years. May his soul rest in eternal peace." The cricketing world has truly lost one of its most visionary administrators, whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
