KKR and SRH Secure New Players for IPL 2026 Following Injury Setbacks
In a significant development ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced key player replacements due to injuries. The IPL issued an official statement confirming that KKR has enlisted pacer Saurabh Dubey to replace the injured Akash Deep, while SRH has brought in England's David Payne as a substitute for Jack Edwards.
Injury Blow to KKR's Bowling Attack
Akash Deep, a right-arm pacer who has represented India in 10 Tests and taken 28 wickets, has been ruled out of the IPL 2026 season due to a lumbar stress injury. He will undergo treatment under the care of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Medical Team at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. This loss is a major setback for KKR, which has faced recent challenges in its bowling lineup. Last year, the team released Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman following BCCI instructions related to geopolitical issues, replacing him with Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani after his impressive T20 World Cup performance of 13 wickets in six matches.
Additionally, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, acquired for Rs 18 crores last year, has yet to join the KKR camp due to an injury, and Indian pacer Harshit Rana, who missed the T20 World Cup, is also at risk of missing the entire IPL season. To address these gaps, KKR has signed left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey for Rs 30 Lakh. Dubey, who has played three T20s without taking a wicket, will aim to bolster the team's pace attack.
SRH's Strategic Replacement with David Payne
On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad has opted for David Payne as an injury replacement for Jack Edwards. Payne brings international experience, having played one ODI for England and featuring in 233 T20s, where he has claimed 304 wickets. He will join SRH for Rs 1.5 Crore. Edwards, who was the second-highest wicket-taker in the recent Big Bash League (BBL) with 19 scalps in 13 games at an average of 18.47, including a five-wicket haul, also contributed with the bat, scoring 133 runs in 10 innings at an average of 22.16 and a strike rate above 168. His absence is a notable loss for SRH, but Payne's extensive T20 record offers a promising alternative.
These replacements highlight the dynamic nature of team management in the IPL, as franchises adapt to unforeseen injuries and strive to maintain competitive squads. The moves come at a crucial time as teams finalize their rosters for the upcoming season, with fans eagerly anticipating how these new additions will impact the tournament's outcome.
