Mangaluru: The Karnataka State Cricket Association’s (KSCA) Mangaluru zone is set to revitalize school cricket by interacting with educational institutions and deploying coaches to facilitate team selections. Dr. Shrikanth Rai, Chairman of the Mangaluru zone, informed the Times of India that the association intends to conduct a tournament this year after assessing school infrastructure, coaching availability, and willingness to participate. “We are hoping to get eight to 10 teams ready within a month,” Rai stated.
Plans for a Structured Cricket Calendar
The association aims to launch a full-fledged tournament starting next year, incorporating it into the zonal calendar alongside league events. A structured approach is being considered, where schools will be guided to select 15 to 16 players. These players will then undergo training and play practice matches for several weeks before competing in the tournament. Rai emphasized that the primary objective is to ensure children enjoy the game rather than face intense competition at a young age.
Coordination and Challenges
Rai noted that the reopening of schools coincides with the monsoon season, during which slots are available for hosting events. However, the association will adjust match timings or reschedule based on weather conditions. KSCA is collaborating with the Mangaluru Maharaja Trophy franchise and has initiated discussions with coaches to train school students and assist in selection. Addressing challenges, Rai explained that they need to engage with schools to understand their problems, such as whether they have practice facilities. If not, the association will provide them. Regular leagues, including the first division, U-19, U-16, and women’s tournaments, will commence after the monsoon as scheduled.
Reviving Sporting Culture
Rai also highlighted the need to revive sporting culture in schools, expressing concern over declining participation. The initiative aims to foster a love for cricket among young students and rebuild the sporting ethos in educational institutions.
