Maple Leafs acquire Darren Raddysh, sign 8-year deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have strengthened their blue line ahead of NHL free agency by acquiring defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a trade deal and signing him to an eight-year contract extension. Reports suggest that Raddysh has been on General Manager John Chayka's radar for a long time, dating back to his days in the Ontario Hockey League. According to the NHL, when Chayka was named general manager of the Arizona Coyotes in 2016, he began closely tracking then-Coyotes top prospect Dylan Strome, who, like Raddysh, played his final season with Erie in 2016-17.

Chayka Praises Raddysh's Abilities

Chayka praised the acquisition, calling Raddysh one of the league's premier two-way defensemen. He highlighted the defenseman's puck-moving ability, style, and competitiveness, making him an ideal match for Toronto. After signing Raddysh, Chayka stated, "I think for us, we really saw his career as a continual progression and from a points perspective last year it was a large jump. We have a lot of confidence that the fundamentals of his game had consistently improved and there were several jumps that led to this."

Raddysh's Journey to the NHL

Chayka said he was immediately impressed with the undrafted Raddysh and attempted to sign him with the Coyotes as a free agent before he ultimately signed an AHL contract joining the Chicago Blackhawks organization in 2018. Raddysh eventually made his NHL debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he recorded 143 points (35 goals, 108 assists) in 249 regular-season games and four points (two goals, two assists) in 20 playoff games.

Raddysh's Reaction to the Trade

Speaking about his trade, Raddysh stated, "I couldn't be happier to be joining a great team, a great group of players, and I'm excited to be here for eight years and play for the team I grew up watching."

Additional Moves by the Maple Leafs

In addition to acquiring Raddysh, the Maple Leafs also acquired goalie Samuel Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a third-round pick in the 2026 draft from the Philadelphia Flyers for goalie Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit.
