Merz Gifts Trump '47' Germany Jersey at G7 Summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented US President Donald Trump with a Germany national football team jersey at the 52nd G7 Summit held in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains on Tuesday. The gesture came shortly after Trump celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday.

Jersey Honors Trump's Presidency

In a post on X, Merz shared photos of himself handing over the jersey, which bore the name 'Trump' and the number 47. This number is a direct reference to Trump serving as the 47th President of the United States after assuming office last year. Trump is currently in his second term, having previously served as the 45th President from 2016 to 2020.

"Happy belated 80th birthday, @POTUS. After all, we're on the same team," the German Federal Chancellor wrote in the caption of the X post.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Context

The gift coincides with the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, which is being hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. In their opening match, the United States defeated Paraguay 4-1, starting their campaign on a strong note. Meanwhile, Germany recorded a massive 7-1 victory over Curacao in their first game.

Trump's Birthday Celebrations

Earlier on Sunday, President Trump hosted a UFC fight night on the White House grounds as part of America's 250th anniversary celebrations, which also coincided with his 80th birthday. The event drew key leaders from his administration and Trump supporters, along with his entire immediate family. According to CNN, while the fight night generated enthusiasm among Trump supporters, it also attracted criticism from opponents and skepticism from some Republicans. Protesters rallied outside the White House, while attendees filled the surrounding fan zones.

First lady Melania Trump sat next to the president throughout the fights, with Barron Trump seated behind them. Other family members in attendance included Donald Trump Jr. and his wife Bettina Trump, Eric Trump and Lara Trump, Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, and Tiffany Trump with her husband Michael Boulos. Several of the president's grandchildren also watched the mixed martial arts event. After the third fight concluded, some in the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to President Donald Trump.
