Daryl Mitchell Thanks IPL for Mastering Indian Conditions
New Zealand cricketer Daryl Mitchell has expressed deep gratitude for his Indian Premier League experience. He believes it played a crucial role in his recent outstanding performance during New Zealand's historic ODI series victory in India.
Record-Breaking Batting Display
Mitchell delivered remarkable scores of 84, 131 not out, and 137 across three matches. His centuries in the second and third ODIs proved decisive. They helped New Zealand recover from a 1-0 deficit to clinch their first-ever ODI series win on Indian soil.
"I am very grateful for the time I spent in Chennai, and also in Rajasthan," Mitchell stated after the third ODI. "Hopefully, I'll be back here a few more times in the future. India is a great place to tour. Playing in front of these fans is very special."
IPL Experience Proves Invaluable
Mitchell's familiarity with Indian conditions stems from his IPL stints. He played for Rajasthan Royals in 2022 and Chennai Super Kings in 2024. This exposure helped him adapt quickly to the pitches and atmosphere during the international series.
However, a note of irony exists. Mitchell went unsold in the recent IPL 2026 auction. This means he currently has no IPL contract for the upcoming season.
Preparation Back Home Also Key
Mitchell emphasized that New Zealand's domestic preparation was equally vital. The team trained extensively at Lincoln and Mount Maunganui before the tour.
"We spent a lot of time preparing in Lincoln and at Mount Maunganui," he explained. "International cricket gives you exposure to different surfaces and different ways of scoring runs. We're very lucky to have good preparation back home and groundsmen who help us simulate conditions."
Consistent Excellence in India
Mitchell's recent exploits add to an already impressive record in India. In 16 ODIs played in the country, he has amassed 938 runs at a stunning average of 72.15. This includes four centuries and three half-centuries.
His performance in India far surpasses his record at home. In 18 ODIs in New Zealand, he has scored 650 runs at an average of 65.00. This stark contrast highlights his special affinity for Indian conditions.
The all-rounder's contributions have solidified his reputation as a key player for New Zealand. His ability to thrive in challenging overseas conditions continues to impress cricket fans worldwide.
