Morkel Opens Door for Young Pacer
India's bowling coach Morne Morkel has hinted that uncapped pacer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could make his international debut in the second T20I against England, scheduled for July 5 in Chennai. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Morkel praised the 22-year-old's recent performances in domestic cricket and his ability to swing the ball both ways.
"Vaibhav has been impressive in the nets and his domestic numbers speak for themselves. We are looking at all options to strengthen our bowling attack," Morkel said. The left-arm pacer has taken 28 wickets in 12 T20 matches this season at an economy rate of 7.8.
Team India's Bowling Concerns
The Indian team management is reportedly considering changes to the bowling lineup after a narrow win in the first T20I. Morkel acknowledged the need for variety, especially against England's aggressive batting order. "We need bowlers who can execute plans under pressure. Vaibhav has that temperament," he added.
Sooryavanshi, who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket, has been part of the India A setup and recently toured South Africa with the senior team as a net bowler. His ability to generate bounce and seam movement has caught the selectors' attention.
England's Challenge
England, led by Jos Buttler, will look to level the series after losing the first T20I by 5 wickets. Their batting lineup, featuring the likes of Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone, poses a significant threat. Morkel emphasized the importance of early wickets. "We have to hit the right lengths and not give them width. Vaibhav's natural length could be effective," he noted.
The second T20I will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, known for its slow pitch. However, Morkel believes Sooryavanshi's pace and bounce could be an asset. "Even on slower tracks, a bowler who can hit the deck hard is valuable."
India's Squad and Potential Changes
India's squad for the T20I series includes several fast bowlers, but Morkel hinted at rotation to manage workload. "We have a long season ahead, so we will look to give opportunities to players who deserve it," he said. Apart from Sooryavanshi, other bowlers like Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel are also in contention.
Sooryavanshi's potential debut would be a significant moment for the young pacer, who has worked his way up through the ranks. His performance in the domestic T20 tournament, where he averaged 16.2, has been exceptional.
Fan Expectations and Team Spirit
Fans have expressed excitement on social media about the possibility of a new face in the Indian bowling attack. Morkel urged patience, saying, "We are building a bench strength. It's about giving players the right exposure." The team's morale is high after the first win, and Morkel stressed the importance of consistency.
The second T20I is crucial for India to seal the series. With Morkel's backing, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could be the surprise package that England might not be prepared for.
