Netherlands Cricket Team Enlists Local Talent to Counter India's Left-Handed Batting Powerhouse

In a unique strategic move ahead of their crucial Group A clash, the Netherlands cricket team has turned to local talent to prepare for India's formidable left-handed batting lineup. With the 2026 T20 World Cup match scheduled at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, the Dutch side faced an unusual challenge: their entire batting order lacks left-handers, while India boasts six southpaws in their top eight positions.

An Unusual Request to Gujarat Cricket Association

The Netherlands management approached Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel with a specific request: provide a left-handed batsman for their net practice sessions. This request came as the team sought to simulate match conditions against India's dominant left-handers, including Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, and Axar Patel.

"The Dutch team's liaison officer requested a left-handed batsman in the nets, as they don't have left-handers in their squad," confirmed Patel. The timing proved challenging, with Gujarat's domestic season recently concluded, making available players scarce at short notice.

Enter Manan Hingrajia: Gujarat's Ranji Trophy Captain

Answering the call was 28-year-old Manan Hingrajia, captain of Gujarat's Ranji Trophy team. With his state side eliminated from the tournament, Hingrajia found himself available to assist the international visitors. "I got a call from the GCA to come and bat at their nets," Hingrajia recounted. "I very much enjoyed my experience batting against them and hitting sixes against them felt really good."

For two consecutive days at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Hingrajia participated in intensive net sessions, specifically instructed to play aggressive shots to replicate India's batting approach. "They wanted a left-handed batter to bowl to," he explained. "They treated me very well. They have a pretty good bowling attack. Some of their pace bowlers are very good."

Hingrajia's Impressive Credentials

Though yet to play T20 cricket for Gujarat, Hingrajia brings substantial first-class experience to the practice sessions:

  • 31 first-class matches with 1,748 runs at an average of 40.65
  • Four centuries and nine half-centuries in his career
  • 369 runs in seven matches during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season at an average of 41.00
  • BCCI's 'Best Batsman of the Year' award in 2020, presented by Virat Kohli
  • Captained Gujarat's Under-23 team to the Col CK Nayudu Trophy title in 2018-19
  • Tournament's highest run-getter with 872 runs in 10 matches during that championship season

"Manan is a talented batsman," emphasized Patel, highlighting his leadership in securing both the U-23 championship and One-day title during that successful season. The left-hander also represented West Zone in the Duleep Trophy following his impressive 603-run performance in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season.

Strategic Preparation for the Crucial Encounter

John, the media manager for the Dutch cricket team, observed Hingrajia's impact during practice: "Manan hit some big sixes in the nets, practicing his range hitting." This targeted training aims to give Netherlands bowlers valuable exposure to left-handed batting patterns before facing India's star-studded lineup.

The Netherlands' innovative approach underscores the strategic depth teams employ in international tournaments. With India fielding an unprecedented number of left-handers in their top order, this preparation could prove crucial in Wednesday's match. The practice sessions at one of cricket's largest venues provided both teams with valuable insights ahead of their Group A showdown in the prestigious T20 World Cup tournament.
