Niranjan Singh, fondly called 'Nanji' by generations of students at Khalsa College, Amritsar, died on Saturday evening at around 83 years of age. He operated the famed Niranjan Tea Stall opposite the college's main gate for more than five decades.
Tea stall was a campus landmark
His stall, known for serving tea, samosas, and omelettes, became a landmark for thousands of students, scholars, and visitors. Despite his age, Singh continued working until his final days, remaining dedicated to his customers.
A father figure to students
Beyond being a vendor, 'Nanji' shared a special bond with students. Many former students recalled that he cared for them like a parent, offering not just food and tea but also guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear during their college years. His stall served as a meeting point where friendships were formed and memories created.
Social media tributes pour in
Following his death, tributes flooded social media. Khalsa College alumni from around the world shared heartfelt memories and expressed grief. Many described him as an inseparable part of the college's identity, remembering his humility and kindness. 'He was more than a tea seller; he was a mentor and friend,' wrote one alumnus.
