In a significant boost to sports infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh inaugurated the NTR cricket stadium at Gollavanigunta in Tirupati on Wednesday. The stadium, named after TDP founder and former chief minister NT Rama Rao, is a state-of-the-art facility designed to promote multiple sports disciplines.

Features of the NTR Cricket Stadium

The flood-lit stadium spans an impressive 9.5 acres and includes five practice cricket pitches, ensuring ample training opportunities for aspiring cricketers. Beyond cricket, the complex features dedicated courts for volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, and ball badminton, making it a versatile hub for various athletic activities.

The pavilion at the stadium can accommodate up to 5,000 visitors, providing a comfortable viewing experience for spectators. This modern infrastructure is expected to host local and regional tournaments, fostering a vibrant sports culture in the region.

Funding and Development

The development of the NTR cricket stadium was a collaborative effort, with funding totaling ₹10 crore allocated by the Tirupati Smart City Corporation, Tirupati Urban Development Authority, and the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh. This investment underscores the government's commitment to enhancing sports facilities across the state.

Additional Sports Projects Inaugurated

During the event, Minister Lokesh also inaugurated the Nara Rammurthy Naidu Kreeda Vikasa Kendram at Chandragiri. This sports development center has been developed on 2.5 acres of land at a cost of ₹3 crore, aimed at nurturing athletic talent through specialized training programs.

Furthermore, Lokesh laid the foundation stone for the Karanam Malleswari Weightlifting Academy, which will be established at the Srinivasa Sports Complex in Tirupati. The academy will include a boxing ring built to national standards, providing elite training facilities for weightlifters and boxers.

Upcoming Sports Infrastructure Initiatives

In addition to these inaugurations, Minister Lokesh initiated several other sports projects across the region. These include:

  • A multipurpose stadium worth ₹2.2 crore at Kota in the Gudur constituency.
  • A sporting facility valued at ₹2 crore at Sullurpeta Government High School, which also hosts the annual flamingo festival.
  • Sports infrastructure worth ₹80 lakh at the Renigunta tribal school and hostel, aimed at promoting sports among tribal communities.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to develop comprehensive sports infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, encouraging youth participation and excellence in athletics. The projects are expected to benefit thousands of students and athletes, providing them with modern facilities to hone their skills.
