PSL Shifts to Auction System from Season 11, Boosts Team Purse to $1.6 Million
PSL Adopts IPL-Style Auction, Increases Purse to $1.6M

The Pakistan Cricket Board has made a major announcement about the future of the Pakistan Super League. Starting with the 11th season, the PSL will completely change how teams build their rosters. The league is moving from a traditional draft system to a full player auction.

Following the IPL Model

This significant shift mirrors the approach used by the Indian Premier League. The PCB believes this change will bring more excitement and fairness to team building. Salman Naseer, the PSL chief executive, explained the reasoning behind this decision.

"The PSL will now transition from a draft to players auction system," Naseer stated. "This should increase transparency and enhance the competitive balance of teams in the league."

Bigger Budgets for Teams

Along with the format change comes a financial boost for all franchises. Each team will now have a total purse of USD 1.6 million for player acquisitions. This represents a substantial increase from the previous budget of USD 1.3 million.

Naseer emphasized that the new system offers better earning opportunities for players. With more money available and an auction format, talented cricketers can potentially secure higher salaries through competitive bidding.

Revised Retention Rules

The auction system brings completely different rules for player retention. Under the new guidelines:

  • Franchises can retain a maximum of four players
  • Only one retention is permitted in each player category
  • The right-to-match option has been eliminated
  • Provisions for hiring mentors and brand ambassadors have been removed

This marks a dramatic reduction from previous seasons. Earlier, teams could retain up to eight players along with a mentor and brand ambassador. They also had the right-to-match option to keep a ninth player during the draft process.

Special Provisions for New Teams

The PCB has made special arrangements for the two new franchises joining the league. Hyderabad and Sialkot will receive special treatment before the auction begins.

Both new teams will be allowed to pick four players each from the available player pool. This gives them a foundation to build upon before entering the competitive auction environment.

Additionally, each franchise receives one special privilege. They can make one direct signing of an overseas player who did not participate in PSL 10. This allows teams to bring in fresh international talent outside the auction process.

Season 11 Details

The 11th season of the Pakistan Super League has been scheduled to begin on March 26. The PCB has confirmed that Faisalabad will be included as a venue for matches.

This format change represents the most significant structural shift since the league began in 2016. For eight seasons, the PSL operated under a draft system that many fans and analysts had grown accustomed to.

The move to an auction format signals the PCB's commitment to modernizing the league. They aim to create more parity among teams while increasing the overall excitement around team building and player acquisitions.

Cricket enthusiasts will be watching closely to see how this transition affects team dynamics and player movement. The auction format typically creates more dramatic moments as teams compete for top talent in real-time bidding wars.
