Rohit Sharma's Social Media Mantra for T20 World Cup Team
Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma, the captain who led India to victory in the last T20 World Cup, has shared crucial advice for the national team ahead of their title defense. Speaking exclusively to broadcaster JioHotstar, Sharma emphasized the importance of staying away from social media and maintaining dignified conduct on the field.
'It Is Ideal to Get Off Social Media'
Sharma revealed his personal approach to handling external pressures during major tournaments. "It is ideal to get off social media. I still stay away. I get news from outside that this happened or that happened and I love it," he said. The veteran batsman practiced this during the 2023 World Cup, explaining that he had to implement it himself before suggesting it to others.
Interestingly, Sharma didn't impose this rule on his teammates, despite considering it. He consulted with coach Rahul Dravid, who felt it was a "very personal" decision. However, several players voluntarily approached Sharma suggesting the team adopt this approach collectively.
The 2023 World Cup Blueprint
Reflecting on India's successful 2023 World Cup campaign, Sharma highlighted how team bonding activities contributed to their performance:
- Introducing fielding medals to recognize exceptional efforts
- Spending quality time together during the 45-day tournament
- Creating a positive team environment through camaraderie
"The 2023 World Cup was one of our best campaigns, not just because of what we did on the field, but also off it," Sharma recalled, noting how these elements translated into on-field success.
Ground Rules for Title Defense
As India prepares to defend their T20 World Cup title on home soil, Sharma outlined essential principles for the team:
- Maintain classy behavior on the field that reflects India's cricketing legacy
- Carry yourself well as ambassadors representing the country
- Block outside noise and create a protective team bubble
- Focus on being the best version of yourself rather than immediate results
"I want the team to be seen as a very classy team. When you play on the ground, people should know that it's the Indian team," Sharma emphasized, noting these behavioral aspects took priority over tactical discussions about batting or bowling.
Handling Home Pressure
Sharma candidly discussed the unique pressures of playing a World Cup in India, joking about his fears during the 2023 tournament. "My biggest fear was that if we lost a match and went to the airport, people would rip us apart," he admitted.
The team considered various strategies to manage this pressure, including using headphones to block noise, but ultimately focused on creating their own positive environment. Sharma acknowledged that while he considered suggesting a social media blackout, he respected individual preferences and didn't want to act like a "professor or headmaster."
Confidence in Current Squad
Looking ahead to India's title defense, Sharma expressed strong confidence in the current team's capabilities. "I wish them the best. I really do, because I think with the team we have, it's very much possible to do what no team has ever done," he said, referring to the potential of winning a T20 World Cup at home and achieving three consecutive ICC trophies.
The three-time ICC white ball finalist's insights provide valuable perspective on managing modern cricket's mental challenges while maintaining the dignity and excellence expected of Team India on the global stage.
