Hockey India has announced a 20-member Indian Women's Hockey Team for the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, with Salima Tete continuing as captain. The tournament is scheduled from September 19 to October 4 in Japan.
Salima Tete Retains Captaincy After Nations Cup Victory
Salima Tete, who led India to the FIH Nations Cup title in New Zealand last month, will again lead the side. Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne highlighted the team's balance, stating, "We have a group in which we have a nice balance between juniors, experienced players and seniors who are constantly working to get the best out of each other."
Goalkeepers and Defence
Savita, recently awarded the Padma Shri, and Bichu Devi Kharibam are the two goalkeepers. The defence includes Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Ishika Chaudhary, Jyoti, Lalthantluangi, and Shilpi Dabas. Lalthantluangi and Shilpi Dabas made their senior debuts during the FIH Nations Cup and earned their places through strong performances in India's unbeaten run.
Midfield and Forward Line
In midfield, captain Salima Tete is joined by Nikki Pradhan, Sakshi Rana, Sunelita Toppo, Neha, and Deepika Soreng. The forward line features Lalremsiami, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Navneet Kaur, Deepika, Ishika, Baljeet Kaur, and Beauty Dungdung.
Coach's Confidence
Marijne expressed confidence in the squad, saying, "This group of players has shown that they have the right form and fitness in recent months. We are confident that this team is ready for the challenge at the Asian Games."
