Shreyas Iyer Speaks After India's Heavy Defeat

India batsman Shreyas Iyer has opened up following the team's humiliating loss to England in the Nottingham Test, expressing disappointment over the batting performance that led to a comprehensive defeat. England won the match by 227 runs on the fifth day, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Batting Collapse Costs India

India were set a target of 284 runs but were bowled out for 157 in their second innings, with only Shreyas Iyer (27) and Rishabh Pant (22) offering some resistance. Iyer admitted that the batting unit failed to execute plans against England's disciplined bowling attack, led by James Anderson and Ollie Robinson.

"We had a good start in the first innings but could not capitalize. The wicket was challenging, but we needed to apply ourselves better. England bowled in good areas, and we kept losing wickets at crucial intervals," Iyer said after the match.

Missed Opportunities in the Field

India also missed several chances in the field, dropping catches that allowed England to build crucial partnerships. Iyer acknowledged that the team's fielding was below par and contributed to the defeat.

"We dropped a few catches, and in these conditions, you cannot afford to give chances to the opposition. We need to improve our fielding standards if we want to compete in this series," he added.

Anderson's Masterclass

James Anderson was the pick of the bowlers for England, taking 5 wickets in the second innings, including the key scalps of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. Anderson's reverse swing and accuracy troubled the Indian batsmen throughout the match.

Iyer praised Anderson's skill, saying, "He is a world-class bowler, and we knew he would be tough to face. But as a batting unit, we should have done better against him. We will learn from this and come back stronger."

Looking Ahead to Lord's Test

India will now travel to London for the second Test at Lord's, starting August 12. Iyer stressed the need for the team to regroup and address the batting issues.

"We have a few days before the next Test. We will work on our weaknesses and come up with better plans. The series is still long, and we have the ability to bounce back," he concluded.
