Shreyas Iyer Recalls Painful Spleen Injury Experience
Indian batter Shreyas Iyer recently opened up about the serious spleen injury he sustained during the third ODI against Australia. He admitted he initially failed to grasp the severity of his condition. The full impact only became clear after hospital admission.
Excruciating Pain and Sudden Realization
Iyer described the pain as absolutely excruciating. He confessed he didn't understand how serious the injury was until medical professionals explained the spleen's importance. "I didn't even know about the word spleen before that day," Iyer revealed. The cricketer learned about this vital organ during his hospital stay.
"The next day when I was admitted to the hospital, after that I realised, 'Wow, okay, this was a severe injury,'" Iyer stated. He acknowledged the spleen became a new vocabulary word for him that particular day.
Forced Slowdown and Recovery Process
The injury compelled Iyer to reduce his activity levels dramatically. This proved particularly challenging for someone who constantly prefers staying active. "I'm someone who can't sit in one place. I want to keep doing one thing or another," he explained to broadcasters.
Iyer said this unexpected break provided valuable reflection time. It allowed him to rejuvenate and relax properly. "It's not that you can get up and start working out straight away," he emphasized about the recovery requirements.
Medical advisors gave him a clear timeline. They told him normalcy would return within six to eight weeks before training could resume. Iyer followed their guidelines meticulously. "I just followed the proper guidelines which I was provided with and then after that it was a smooth sailing ride," he recalled.
Successful Comeback and Natural Approach
Despite this significant setback, Iyer made an impressive return to cricket. He scored 49 valuable runs during India's opening ODI victory against New Zealand in Vadodara. This performance demonstrated his successful recovery.
Speaking about his current batting mindset, Iyer emphasized instinctual play. "Honestly speaking, I'm not trying to do anything. It's just the instincts," he stated. The batter now focuses on natural reactions and staying completely present during matches.
Batting Partnership with Virat Kohli
Iyer also discussed his experiences batting alongside Virat Kohli. He described their communication as consistently humorous and lighthearted. Their primary objectives remain straightforward according to Iyer.
They concentrate on maintaining positivity throughout their partnership. Building a secure total for the team represents another key focus. Providing confidence to bowlers completes their three-pronged approach. Iyer believes this mindset significantly enhances team performance and match outcomes.
The cricketer's journey from painful injury to successful comeback highlights both physical resilience and mental adaptation. His experience underscores the challenges professional athletes face and their determination to overcome physical setbacks.
