Former Captain Srikkanth Blasts Badoni's ODI Selection
Ayush Badoni's unexpected inclusion in India's ODI squad for the New Zealand series has sparked a major controversy. Former India captain and ex-BCCI chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth launched a fierce attack on the decision. He questioned the entire selection process with strong words.
Questionable Statistics and Performance
Badoni joined the squad as a replacement for the injured Washington Sundar. His recent form raises serious questions. In the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, his performance has been below average. His List A cricket average stands at a modest 36.47. This contrasts sharply with his strong first-class record of nearly 58.
Srikkanth did not hold back during his YouTube channel appearance. He directly challenged the selection committee's reasoning. "Out of Axar Patel, Badoni, Nitish Reddy and Ruturaj Gaikwad, which two must really be in the team?" Srikkanth asked pointedly.
Allegations of Favoritism
The former captain hinted strongly at possible favoritism. He noted Badoni played for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. Gautam Gambhir served as mentor there. "I don't see any other reason. What else can it be? On what basis?" Srikkanth questioned, taking a clear dig at the current India head coach.
Srikkanth used dramatic language to express his frustration. "What kind of door is this? Bring two or three trucks, take them and go through and break the door," he said. This metaphor suggests breaking into the Indian team has become extremely difficult for deserving domestic players.
Debate Over All-Rounder Status
Srikkanth strongly rejected Badoni's labeling as a bowling all-rounder. "What rubbish is this? How is he considered a bowling all-rounder?" he exclaimed. The former World Cup winner argued for more established players. "If an all-rounder is missing, why not bring in Axar Patel? He is a genuine all-rounder in all formats."
The cricket legend emphasized the difference between IPL and ODI cricket. "IPL and one-day cricket are different. He has not done anything great. He is not a guy who can take the match away from you." Srikkanth questioned Badoni's power-hitting credentials at the crucial number six position.
Inconsistent Selection Criteria
Srikkanth highlighted what he sees as unfair selection practices. "For some players, you are told to score runs. For some, you are picked even if you don't do anything. That's absolutely unfair," he stated. He pointed to Ruturaj Gaikwad's omission despite scoring a century in a previous ODI series.
Team Management's Defense
India's team management has defended their decision. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained their reasoning. Badoni was included as a like-for-like replacement after Sundar's rib injury. "We couldn't go into a match with only five bowling options. Badoni can give us four to five overs," Kotak clarified.
The coach insisted the selection was driven by team balance and specific requirements. However, the debate continues to rage across cricket circles. Fans and experts remain divided on whether Badoni deserves this opportunity or if the selection process needs greater transparency.
