Suryakumar Yadav Laughs Off Sanju Samson Rumors, Backs Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma
Indian cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav responded with shock and immediate laughter when questioned about the possibility of Sanju Samson replacing either Abhishek Sharma or Tilak Varma in India's Playing XI for the upcoming T20 World Cup Super Eight match against South Africa. The speculation had been fueled by social media rumors connecting dots from Samson's extended net session, but Yadav firmly ruled out any such changes for the crucial contest scheduled in Ahmedabad on February 22.
Extended Training Session and Team Preparation
The Indian squad conducted an intensive training session at the Narendra Modi Stadium on February 20, with every player putting in over four hours of work. Sanju Samson's extended practice was not an anomaly but part of the team's comprehensive preparation routine, which included swapping nets, exchanging partners, and utilizing the training area near the main enclosure for skill-based exercises.
Suryakumar Yadav addressed the team's current performance, stating, "It's going well in power play. We're making 50-40 runs. That's normal cricket. Now we've played so well in bilateral series. It happens – we have expectations, we also have expectations from ourselves. Expectation to make 220, 240, 250. But wickets are a little different here. The four wickets we have played on so far were a little different and challenging. Off-spinners were not bowling earlier but are now. So we have started preparation for that and hopefully we will tackle it as we start our Super Eight journey."
Confidence in Abhishek Sharma's Form
Despite Abhishek Sharma batting for only around 20 minutes during practice and having a tournament tally of zero runs after three innings, the team management remains unconcerned about the aggressive opener's form. Suryakumar Yadav expressed his confidence in Sharma's abilities and redirected the concern toward opposing teams.
Yadav elaborated, "About Abhishek's form, I worry for the people who are worried about Abhishek's form, I worry about them. Why are they so worried about Abhishek's form? But I think about those teams who are going to play against him. That he has not yet scored a run. You know the rest of the answers. When he scores a run, you have seen what happens."
"It happens, it's a team sport, it keeps going on. Now the team has a requirement that the boy should play with his identity. So he is trying to play. If it happens, then it's fine, if it doesn't, then we are there to cover. Last year he covered for us, now we will cover for him," added the captain, emphasizing the team's supportive approach.
Support for Tilak Varma's Role and Performance
Tilak Varma has faced criticism for his cautious batting approach during the middle-overs period, where India has struggled to maintain momentum. The 23-year-old has scored 106 runs in four outings, but his strike-rate of 120.45 has drawn scrutiny. However, Suryakumar Yadav defended Varma, explaining that his batting style aligns with the team's strategic plan.
Yadav clarified, "The team management has told him that he has to bat that way. If one wicket is down, then he is definitely, he can go and have his own game in the powerplay. But as soon as two wickets are down, then he has to take a little bit of backseat, get a partnership again, get to the 10th over and then we have enough firepower to continue and take on the bowling."
"I am sure he must not be happy with how he is batting right now. He must be and he has practised a lot as well in the last 2-3 practice sessions. But I don't have any concern regarding him. He has been delivering for India at No. 3 really well and I am very confident that he will do it better," stated Yadav, showing strong support for the young batsman.
Flexibility in Batting Order and Strategic Adjustments
Under head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, flexibility and intent have been key principles in India's new T20I cycle. While openers have fixed roles, positions No. 3 and No. 4 have been designated for Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. However, the challenging surfaces in the T20 World Cup have raised questions about whether India should reconsider the entry points for lower-order players like Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, and Rinku Singh.
Suryakumar Yadav indicated openness to strategic adjustments, saying, "Except the openers, I think from 3 to 7 or 3 to 8 everyone has to be very flexible and that has been the message in the group, that if there is no wicket down till 8 or 9 overs, there might be a point where you might see Shivam Dubey walking in or even a Hardik walking in, if there is a proper match up. So everyone has to be very flexible, even I am flexible, I have said the same thing to everyone. So if we get into that situation, we will definitely have it and take that call."
Team Morale and Final Preparations
During an optional practice session, Suryakumar Yadav spent considerable time with Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh, engaging in a lengthy discussion under an umbrella after the left-handers completed their batting practice. The atmosphere remained positive, with teammates enthusiastically cheering Kuldeep Yadav's big hits. As the tournament enters its critical phase, the rest of the squad is focusing on recovery and mental preparation before the business end begins.
