The District Road Safety Committee of Chandigarh has decided to honour six individuals for their exemplary humanitarian efforts in assisting road accident victims. Under the Rah-Veer Scheme (Good Samaritan Scheme) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, each Good Samaritan will receive an appreciation certificate and a cash reward of Rs 25,000.
List of Honourees
The six Good Samaritans to be honoured are: Anuj Sharma, a resident of Sector 15, Panchkula; Sukhdev Singh from Sarangpur village; Anil Kumar from Mauli Jagran Complex; Pardeep from Kajheri village; Mohd Rashid from Sector 52; and Col Kumar Sugandh, a resident of Dappar, SAS Nagar.
Objective of the Scheme
The Rah-Veer Scheme aims to encourage and recognise individuals who provide timely assistance to road accident victims during the critical “golden hour” – the first hour after a traumatic injury, which is crucial for survival. The scheme was launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to promote bystander intervention and reduce fatalities from road accidents.
Committee Decision
The decision to honour these individuals was taken during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav. The committee appreciated the selfless acts of the Good Samaritans and emphasised the importance of such recognition in fostering a culture of road safety and mutual aid.
Impact of the Golden Hour
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, timely assistance during the golden hour can significantly reduce the severity of injuries and save lives. The Rah-Veer Scheme not only rewards Good Samaritans but also protects them from legal hassles, encouraging more people to help accident victims without fear.
