Vaibhav Sooryavanshi becomes India's youngest international debutant
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old from Bihar's Samastipur district, made history on Saturday by becoming India's youngest debutant in international cricket. At 15 years and 99 days, he surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who held the record for nearly 37 years. Tendulkar made his debut at 16 years and 205 days.
Sooryavanshi debuted in the second T20I against England in Manchester. His aggressive batting style, tailored for the slam-bang T20 format, contrasts sharply with Tendulkar's classical, defence-oriented technique. While Tendulkar's first international match was a Test against Pakistan in 1989, Sooryavanshi entered the modern era with 4k cameras tracking his every move.
From floppy discs to AI: A generational shift
Tendulkar debuted when the Berlin Wall still stood and the Soviet Union existed. Rajiv Gandhi was still Prime Minister, and economic liberalisation was a year away. Sooryavanshi, a Gen Z teenager, represents a generation shaped by Artificial Intelligence and smartphones. According to the PTI report, "Tendulkar was the cause. Sooryavanshi is the effect."
The hype around Sooryavanshi is unprecedented since Tendulkar's emergence. Fans have been queuing for selfies since his arrival in the UK. One fan even took a selfie with Sooryavanshi's Rajasthan Royals-appointed guardian Romi Bhinder, mistaking him for the cricketer. The lines between public figure and public property have blurred in the digital age.
Record-breaking debut and context
Sooryavanshi's debut is the youngest for an Indian male cricketer, surpassing Shafali Verma (15 years, 239 days) among females. Globally, the youngest Test debutant is Pakistan's Hasan Raza (14 years, 227 days), and the youngest international debutant overall is Romania's Marian Gherasim in T20Is (14 years, 16 days). Sooryavanshi's journey, as noted by PTI, is just beginning, embodying an aspirational 'Make In India' story.
