Separate Changing Room for Youngest Indian Cricketer
Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, India's youngest international cricketer, will have a separate changing room during the upcoming England tour due to safeguarding protocols. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regulations prohibit players under 16 from using adult changing rooms, necessitating dedicated facilities for Sooryavanshi. This arrangement marks a first-of-its-kind measure for an Indian cricketer on a maiden tour.
Unique Arrangement for the T20I Series
Sooryavanshi, who made his international debut earlier this year, will be part of India's five-match T20I series against England starting June 26. The ECB is coordinating with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and venue authorities to enforce all safeguarding measures. Sooryavanshi's parents are expected to accompany him on the tour to ensure his well-being, according to sources familiar with the planning.
Dressing Room Access and Restrictions
Despite the separate changing room, Sooryavanshi can attend team talks and be in the dressing room during matches. The restrictions only apply before and after games, when he must use his own facility. This ensures he remains integrated with the team while complying with child protection protocols.
Regulatory Coordination and Impact
The ECB's safeguarding policies are designed to protect minors in professional cricket environments. The BCCI has confirmed its support for the measures, emphasizing the importance of player welfare. Sooryavanshi's unique situation highlights the growing focus on child safety in international sports, with both boards committed to upholding the highest standards.
