15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi becomes youngest T20I debutant for India against England
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi makes historic T20I debut at 15

India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first in the second T20I against England at Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday. The match marked a historic moment as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi received his maiden India cap from Tilak Varma, becoming the youngest player to debut in men's T20I cricket and the youngest to represent India in men's internationals.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's record-breaking debut

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, aged 15 years and 233 days, surpassed the previous record held by Afghanistan's Qais Ahmad (16 years, 168 days) to become the youngest T20I debutant. He also became the youngest Indian to play in any men's international format, beating the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar (16 years, 205 days) in Tests.

Sooryavanshi replaced Sanju Samson in the playing XI. Speaking at the toss, Iyer praised the teenager: "Absolutely... you've seen him in the last few months, the way he's been batting. I feel that he completely deserves to be in the squad. He's someone who doesn't take pressure at all. Has an unflinching nature."

India's batting strategy and team composition

India opted to bat first after winning the toss, continuing their aggressive approach from the series opener. Iyer said, "We'll bat first again. We've got one change. Vaibhav comes in for Sanju." The Indian skipper also highlighted the depth of talent in Indian cricket: "You see the competition, it's game after game - the amount of talent India produces is pleasing to the eye. Keeps us on our toes. Pressure is a privilege I feel."

India's playing XI included openers Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma, followed by Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), skipper Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Harshit Rana, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, and Varun Chakaravarthy.

England's response and team changes

England captain Harry Brook said he would have also batted first. "Would've had a bat as well. Was an awesome day. Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to do that again unless we chase down 300. Happy with the selections," Brook said. England made two changes, bringing in Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue. "Joff is coming back in - strong player for us. Tongue has been knocking on the door. They're both very skilful bowlers and have extremely good slower balls. Also, the ability to nail the yorkers," Brook added. He confirmed the team had done some homework on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

England's playing XI: Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Harry Brook (captain), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue.

Historical context and significance

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut adds a new chapter to Indian cricket's legacy of young talent. The previous youngest Indian T20I debutant was Tilak Varma, who debuted at 20 years and 284 days in 2023. Sooryavanshi's entry at 15 underscores India's focus on nurturing prodigious talent. The match also marks the first time a 15-year-old has played in a men's T20I, highlighting the evolving nature of the format.
