VVS Laxman Set to Lead India in Zimbabwe and Asian Games
VVS Laxman, the former Indian cricketer and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief, is likely to take on the role of head coach for the Indian cricket team during the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe and the Asian Games. This arrangement comes as the primary head coach, Gautam Gambhir, is scheduled to be with the main squad for the West Indies series, which clashes with these events.
Scheduling Conflict Drives Coaching Change
The Asian Games, scheduled for later this year, overlap with India's bilateral series against the West Indies. As a result, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to send a second-string team to Zimbabwe and the Asian Games, with Laxman at the helm. According to sources close to the BCCI, the decision aims to ensure that both assignments receive adequate coaching attention without overburdening Gambhir.
Laxman's Previous Coaching Stints
This would not be Laxman's first experience as a head coach. He previously led the Indian team during the tour of Ireland in 2023 and also oversaw the squad for the Asian Games that year. His familiarity with managing young and emerging players makes him a suitable candidate for these assignments. The BCCI is expected to officially confirm the coaching appointments in the coming days.
Impact on Team Preparation
The Zimbabwe tour and Asian Games will provide an opportunity for fringe players to showcase their talent. Laxman's expertise in nurturing talent at the NCA will be crucial in guiding the squad. The Asian Games, in particular, hold significance as cricket returns to the multi-sport event after a long gap, and India will aim to secure a medal.
