Young batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, despite being brought into the Indian national cricket squad for the T20I series against Ireland, did not feature in the playing XI for either of the two matches. The decision has sparked debate over whether the team management missed an opportunity to address India's ongoing batting concerns.
Sooryavanshi's exclusion despite squad inclusion
Sooryavanshi, who has been touted as a future star, was named in the 15-member squad for the two-match T20I series. However, he remained on the bench throughout, with the team opting for a settled top order. According to team sources, the management preferred experience over youth, given the relatively low-risk nature of the series.
India's batting struggles persist
In the first T20I, India managed only 165/7, with the top order failing to accelerate in the middle overs. The second match saw a similar pattern, with India posting 172/5. Critics argue that Sooryavanshi's aggressive style could have provided the necessary impetus. "It's puzzling why a player of his calibre was not given a chance, especially when the team is looking for solutions," said former cricketer and analyst Sanjay Manjrekar.
Team management's rationale
Head coach Rahul Dravid defended the decision, stating, "We wanted to give consistent opportunities to the players who have been part of the setup. Vaibhav is a talent for the future, and we will find the right time to introduce him." However, with the T20 World Cup approaching, many believe now was the perfect time to test bench strength.
Statistical context
Sooryavanshi, 19, has an impressive domestic record, averaging 58.2 in List A cricket and striking at 145 in T20s. His exclusion meant India's middle order relied on the same set of players, who have averaged only 32 in the last five T20Is. The series against Ireland, which India won 2-0, was seen as a low-pressure opportunity to experiment.
Impact on team dynamics
The decision has also raised questions about the selection committee's communication. "If a player is picked, he should be given a fair chance," said former selector MSK Prasad. "Otherwise, it sends a wrong message to youngsters." Sooryavanshi's agent confirmed the player remains focused and ready for future opportunities.
