World Cup 2026: Socceroos Ready for Egypt Clash

Popovic Confident Ahead of Knockout Match

Australia head coach Tony Popovic has declared that the Socceroos are fully prepared to deliver a strong performance in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash against Egypt, scheduled for Friday in Arlington, Texas. Speaking to Reuters, Popovic acknowledged the high stakes of the knockout encounter and stressed the importance of staying in the moment.

Australia's Group Stage Journey

The Socceroos advanced from Group D, which included co-hosts United States, Turkey, and Paraguay. Australia opened with a 2-0 victory over Turkey, suffered a 2-0 defeat to the USA, and secured a goalless draw against Paraguay. This marks the second consecutive World Cup in which Australia has progressed beyond the group stage.

Focus on the Present

Popovic urged his players to concentrate on the task at hand rather than dwelling on potential historical achievements. "We know how big this game is and I think all the players are ready to deliver. We have to really stay in the moment. The history gets made after the game, so we have to do our part during the match, whether that's 90 minutes, extra time or penalties, to create that history," he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Expecting a Tougher Test

The coach anticipates a more challenging contest against Egypt due to the knockout format. "I'm expecting the game to be even more difficult than we've had so far because it's a knockout game and respect to Egypt as well. But I also feel that we can play better and tomorrow is a chance to do that," Popovic added.

Previous Knockout Setbacks

Australia's prior appearances in the World Cup knockout stage ended in defeats to eventual champions: Italy in 2006 and Argentina in 2022. Popovic acknowledged the team's promising future with emerging young talent but emphasized the current squad's ambition to succeed now. "We believe the future is bright, of course, and there are many young players that aren't here at this stage that will be in the future as well. But I've maintained all along that we wanted to deliver now, with this group. We believe that they're good enough to deliver now," he stated.

Confidence in Squad Quality

Popovic expressed confidence in his team's ability to rise to the occasion, citing their achievement in navigating a difficult group. "We've shown that already by getting through the group, a very difficult group. And we've done that through the quality that these boys have. Tomorrow is another opportunity to not think about the future but to think about now, the present. And I'm sure these boys will deliver once more a very good performance tomorrow," he concluded.
