Yuvraj Singh Inspires Next Generation at Lucknow Cricket Masterclass
Under the bright afternoon sun at Lucknow's Ekana stadium, Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh infused hundreds of aspiring cricketers with energy and enthusiasm during a special masterclass on Monday. The 2011 World Cup hero personally mentored the young athletes through intensive fielding, bowling, and batting drills, creating an unforgettable experience for all participants.
Personal Anecdotes and Early Memories
Addressing the captivated audience of budding cricketers, Yuvraj shared a humorous early memory that helped shape his legendary career. "My first bat was given to me by my father, who said, 'From today, play with this only'. With that bat, I hit a six which struck a person. He started chasing me and I left the bat and ran away," he recalled with laughter, adding that the man later returned the bat to him.
The Crucial Role of Resilience and Mentorship
Beyond entertaining stories, Yuvraj emphasized the critical importance of mental resilience in professional sports. "You need someone who can show you the path to improvement. I've always looked up to my seniors, especially Sachin Tendulkar, in terms of handling physical and mental battles," he explained to the attentive young cricketers.
The former all-rounder, who has worked closely with emerging talents like Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Prabhsimran Singh, and Jammu & Kashmir's Abdul Samad, stressed that raw talent alone is insufficient for success at the highest level. "You need to nurture the mental side. I played the Ranji Trophy and for India, but there was a phase when I was dropped. Speaking to Sachin gave me clarity. That's what mentorship does," he added, highlighting how guidance from experienced players can make a transformative difference.
Celebrating Regional Cricket Progress
Yuvraj specifically highlighted the remarkable rise of Jammu & Kashmir in domestic cricket, noting how the region has progressed despite once struggling for basic equipment. "Today they have created history. Earlier, many didn't even have proper kits, but they kept moving forward," he said with evident admiration for their perseverance and dedication.
Player Reactions and Program Expansion
UP senior women's player Bharti Sharma from Bulandshahr expressed her excitement about the experience. "I am happy to meet Yuvraj. He motivated us and taught us catching, bowling and grips," she said, reflecting the positive impact of the session on participants.
The masterclass marked the significant expansion of DP World's Beyond Boundaries programme in Uttar Pradesh. The initiative featured the delivery of a repurposed shipping container pavilion and the distribution of 250 cricket kits to identified academies across the state. Unveiled in Yuvraj's presence, the innovative container pavilion will be permanently housed at Sage Cricket Academy, providing enhanced facilities for local cricketers.
This comprehensive mentoring session not only provided technical cricket instruction but also delivered invaluable life lessons about perseverance, mental strength, and the importance of guidance from experienced mentors in achieving sporting excellence.
