AIFF Executive Committee Member Accuses Top Brass of Harassment and Intimidation

New Delhi: A significant controversy has erupted within the All India Football Federation (AIFF) as Executive Committee member and Women's Football Committee chairperson Valanka Alemao Churchill has come forward with serious allegations of being "targeted, heckled, and harassed" by the federation's leadership. The incident reportedly occurred during the AIFF's Executive Committee meeting held in New Delhi on March 29.

Allegations of Disrespectful Behavior and Suppression of Voice

In a detailed email sent to fellow Executive Committee members, Alemao specifically criticized AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President N.A. Harris, and Deputy General Secretary M. Satyanarayan. "I wish to place on record the entirely disgusting behaviour of the AIFF President Mr. Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President Mr. N.A. Haris and Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan," she wrote.

As the only female member on AIFF's Executive Committee, Alemao expressed feeling "deeply prejudiced" and claimed that "several attempts were made by the President to suppress my voice." She described how "the President made remarks against me which were unnecessary and disrespectful" and how both Chaubey and Satyanarayan "raised his tone time and again beyond an acceptable decibel with the intention to intimidate me."

Background of Procedural Irregularities and Governance Concerns

Alemao's allegations stem from her persistent questioning of what she perceives as procedural irregularities within Indian football administration. She had previously raised concerns about members not being properly informed regarding the commercial rights tender document. "As an executive committee member, I have the power and responsibility to enquire about important agreements, provide feedback and voice my dissent on decisions that are unconstitutional and illegal," she asserted in her communication.

The Executive Committee member expressed particular concern about being told during the meeting that "I do not have the right to seek details on the operations of the federation." She further noted that "decisions were taken and approvals were sought without considering the powers of the general body," suggesting potential governance issues within the organization.

Previous Criticisms and Global Embarrassment

This is not the first time Alemao has raised concerns about AIFF operations. She had previously criticized federation officials for poor preparations that negatively impacted the Indian women's team during the AFC Women's Asian Cup. The tournament earlier this month in Australia became a moment of global embarrassment when players and coaching staff received poorly fitting jerseys, highlighting what many saw as inadequate preparation and support.

AIFF's Strong Denial and Counter-Allegations

In a statement issued later the same day, the AIFF categorically rejected Alemao's allegations and presented a different narrative. "The AIFF categorically rejects the recent claims made by Executive Committee Ms. Valanka Alemao and wishes to place certain facts on record in the interest of transparency and clarity," the federation stated.

The AIFF emphasized that "all meetings and decisions of the federation are conducted strictly in accordance with its Articles of Association and established procedures." More significantly, the statement accused Alemao of having vested interests, suggesting she was attempting to "force her way into the Indian Super League through exceptional means."

Ongoing Legal Disputes and Conflict of Interest Allegations

The controversy occurs against the backdrop of existing legal disputes between Churchill Brothers, the Goan club where Alemao serves as CEO, and the AIFF. The club has been embroiled in legal proceedings after not getting promoted last season and has separately accused AIFF chief Kalyan Chaubey of conflict of interest, with the Delhi High Court currently hearing these proceedings.

The AIFF statement referenced these legal battles, noting that "several legal petitions were filed by members of Ms. Alemao's family" and alleging that despite her Executive Committee position, "Ms. Alemao repeatedly attempted to influence proceedings during official meetings with the objective of securing the inclusion of her club in the ISL."

This developing situation highlights deeper tensions within Indian football governance, pitting a prominent female administrator's claims of harassment and procedural irregularities against the federation's defense of its processes and allegations of improper influence attempts.
