Dempo SC Seeks Crucial First Victory Against Undefeated Chanmari FC in IFL
Panaji-based Dempo SC, the five-time national champions, are preparing for a pivotal encounter against newcomers Chanmari FC at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl on Thursday. Despite a less-than-ideal start to their Indian Football League (IFL) campaign, the club remains confident in their ability to reverse fortunes and secure their first win of the season.
Challenging Start and Organizational Hurdles
In an unusual season marked by delays, Dempo SC has managed only a 2-2 draw at home against Real Kashmir FC and suffered a 1-2 defeat to Diamond Harbour FC in Kolkata. This leaves them winless and positioned eighth in the ten-team league standings. Head coach Samir Naik, during a pre-match media interaction, highlighted significant challenges, particularly with foreign signings arriving late.
"Most of our foreign players arrived just days before our first game, which is far from ideal," Naik stated. "Argentinian defender Damian Perez only landed in Goa on Tuesday after facing visa issues. While we can't use this as an excuse, having foreigners at least four weeks before the campaign starts is crucial for conditioning and team cohesion."
Naik expressed frustration with the league's organization, pointing out uncertainties that complicated planning. "This has been very challenging for the team, the coaching staff, and the club. I believe the All India Football Federation (AIFF) could have done better in organizing the league to avoid such disruptions," he added.
Defensive Concerns and Offensive Potential
The coach admitted that while the team needs to be more clinical in attack, he is equally concerned about defensive lapses. Dempo has conceded four goals in just two matches, a statistic that Naik aims to address urgently. On a positive note, Trinidad and Tobago striker Marcus Joseph has been a bright spot, scoring two of the team's three goals so far.
"Marcus has shown his quality, but others in the squad have the capability to step up and add to the scorers' list," Naik emphasized. "Our players possess a strong mentality, which is essential. We are mentally very strong and ready to face this challenge head-on."
Upcoming Fixtures and Title Aspirations
Dempo SC faces a testing period with three more away fixtures before returning for four consecutive home games. The club is keen to win the IFL title and return to the top tier of Indian football, but early setbacks have made the path more arduous. Naik remains optimistic, noting the competitive nature of the league.
"The situation is similar for all clubs and coaches—there's limited time for recovery in this short format," he explained. "We must maintain a positive approach. The players have given their best in both games, and with a little more focus, we can get into the top group and challenge for the title. Every team in this league is strong, and anyone can win it."
Opponent Analysis: Chanmari FC's Strong Start
Chanmari FC, the newcomers, present a formidable challenge as they remain undefeated. They secured a 2-1 victory over Sreenidi Deccan in their last outing and held two-time champions Gokulam Kerala to a goalless draw in the opening round. This sets the stage for a compelling match where Dempo's search for a first win clashes with Chanmari's momentum.
As Dempo SC gears up for this crucial away fixture, the team's resilience and strategic adjustments will be key factors in determining whether they can turn their season around and climb the IFL standings.
