Dempo SC Coach Appeals for Fan Support Ahead of Critical IFL Encounter

Panaji: Dempo SC, despite demonstrating considerable promise on the field, have consistently struggled to convert their opportunities into victories. With merely three pivotal matches remaining in the initial phase of the Indian Football League (IFL), head coach Samir Naik is fervently hoping his squad can finally emerge triumphant and restore pride to the historic club.

Dwindling Crowd Numbers Raise Concerns in Football-Obsessed Goa

Beyond the immediate sporting challenges, a significant worry for the team and the state—which officially declared football its state sport back in 2012—is the noticeable decline in spectator attendance. On Tuesday, Samir Naik, a legendary five-time national league champion with Dempo, made a heartfelt public appeal for fan backing as his team prepares to host Shillong Lajong FC at Fatorda's Nehru Stadium.

"During our playing era, I vividly recall the west stand being completely packed even before our warm-up sessions commenced. Regrettably, that is no longer the current scenario," Samir revealed during a pre-match media interaction on Monday, highlighting a stark contrast from the club's glory days.

Dempo's Struggle for a Maiden Victory This Season

The illustrious five-time national champions are still in pursuit of their inaugural win this season after six competitive outings. They have managed to accumulate only three points from three hard-fought draws, positioning them ninth in the IFL standings, merely a single point above the bottom-placed Real Kashmir FC.

Dempo's inability to capitalize on crucial moments has been a recurring theme. In their most recent fixture against Namdhari FC, they seized an early advantage through a Marcus Joseph penalty, only to be denied full points by a goalkeeping error from Ashish Sibi, resulting in a frustrating draw.

"It was an elementary, schoolboy mistake," Samir admitted candidly. "We never practice or train in that manner. Following such an error, most goalkeepers would be emotionally devastated. However, at halftime, I could discern that Ashish was fully aware of his misstep and displayed remarkable character. He maintained his focus thereafter, and I have complete faith in him and the entire squad."

Formidable Challenge Against High-Flying Shillong Lajong

Dempo will need to exhibit exceptional sharpness and precision to overcome the formidable visitors, Shillong Lajong FC, who have suffered just one defeat thus far in the campaign. Lajong currently occupies third place in the league table with 11 points and remains a genuine contender for the championship title.

"There is an abundance of positivity and belief within our dressing room. We consistently maintain an optimistic outlook irrespective of the circumstances. As I mentioned previously, this league is intensely competitive and unpredictable, with situations evolving rapidly. A single victory could propel us significantly up the standings," Samir asserted with conviction.

Mathematical Possibility for Title Challenge Remains Alive

Only the top six teams will advance to contest for the championship in the second phase of the competition. Dempo still retains a mathematical chance of qualification if they can secure three consecutive victories while other results fall in their favor.

"The encouraging aspect is that we are consistently generating scoring opportunities. Perhaps there is a slight lapse in concentration or minor distractions affecting the players at times. Nevertheless, if we manage to score during the early stages of a match, we possess a very strong probability of success," Samir analyzed strategically.

Samir Naik confirmed that he has a fully fit squad at his disposal for Tuesday's crucial encounter. The match is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 PM local time at Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.
