The Devil Wears Prada 2 Opens Modestly in India with Rs 5.50 Cr

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' has recorded a modest opening at the Indian box office. The highly anticipated sequel to the hit Hollywood fashion drama starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway made a splash at Indian theatres, with a Rs 5.50 crore net earning on Day 1.

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' box office collection Day 1

The film, according to Sacnilk, collected Rs 3.80 crore net on Friday across just 1,644 shows. With the inclusion of Thursday's paid preview screenings, the film's total India net collections stand at Rs 5.50 crore, with the total gross collections hitting an estimated Rs 6.57 crore.

The film had built early momentum with its paid previews, placing it on par with the recent Hollywood release 'Michael', which had a similar performance. The Michael Jackson biopic earned an estimated Rs 1.70 crore from paid preview shows and earned Rs 3.70 crore on its opening day. Thus, both Hollywood films registered almost identical collections at the box office.

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' falls short of expectations

However, 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' fell slightly short of its projected collections. As per trade reports, the film was expected to earn an estimated Rs 7 to Rs 8 crore on its opening day, with the inclusion of preview show collections. Driven largely by metro markets such as Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Bengaluru, the film saw strong contributions from premium multiplex chains, particularly PVR INOX.

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' vs 'Raja Shivaji'

The film also faced stiff competition from the Marathi film 'Raja Shivaji'. The historical drama headlined and directed by Riteish Deshmukh earned an estimated Rs 8 crore from just its Marathi screenings and an additional Rs 3.35 crore from its Hindi screenings. The film thus scored nearly double the collection of 'The Devil Wears Prada 2', earning an estimated total collection of Rs 11.35 crore.

Set two decades after the original, the sequel revisits the world of high fashion at Runway Magazine, where its iconic characters navigate an evolving industry shaped by digital disruption and modern ambition in New York City.
