Dempo SC Continues Winning Streak with Dominant 3-0 Victory Over Aizawl FC
In a compelling display of resurgence, Dempo SC have emphatically demonstrated why they remain a formidable force in the Indian Football League (IFL), securing their second consecutive win with a commanding 3-0 triumph against Aizawl FC at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Margao. This victory follows a similar 3-0 result against Shillong Lajong FC just last week, signaling a significant turnaround for the five-time national league champions who were previously struggling this season.
Crucial Points Propel Dempo into Top-Six Contention
The win is pivotal for Dempo SC, as it keeps them firmly in the race to finish in the top six for the second phase of the competition. With this result, Dempo have climbed to fifth place in the IFL standings for the first time this season, accumulating nine points from eight matches. Aizawl FC, despite having the same number of points, have dropped to sixth position due to an inferior goal difference, highlighting the tight competition in the league.
Match Highlights: Dempo's Clinical Performance
The match began with both teams adopting a cautious approach, with possession largely confined to the midfield in the opening 15 minutes. Aizawl FC had a golden opportunity to take an early lead when Laltlanzova capitalized on a mis-pass from Dempo's attack, dribbling past defenders into the opposition box. However, after evading a sliding tackle from Dempo centre-back Aubin Kouakou, Laltlanzova opted to pass to Zomuansangna instead of shooting, and the move fizzled out.
Dempo eventually broke the deadlock just before halftime. Kapil delivered a precise ball into the box, which was picked up by left-back Saiesh Bagkar. Bagkar cleverly created space and took a shot that was deflected by Marcus Joseph, the Trinidad and Tobago striker, into the net for his sixth goal of the season in eight games.
In the second half, Dempo maintained their momentum. In the 54th minute, Kapil's corner caused chaos in the Aizawl box; Saiesh's initial header was saved by goalkeeper Lalhruai Tluanga, but the rebound fell to Colombian defender Jose Moreno, who headed home from close range to double the lead.
Aizawl had a chance to reduce the deficit when Pruthvesh Pednekar fouled Laltlanzova in the penalty area, but Dempo goalkeeper Ashish Sibi made a spectacular diving save to deny Zomuansangna from the spot kick. In added time, substitute Sebastian Gutierrez sealed the victory with a beautifully curled effort, capping off a dominant performance.
League Update: Diamond Harbour FC Maintains Lead
In other IFL action, Diamond Harbour FC rallied to a 3-1 win against Chanmari FC, solidifying their position at the top of the table with 19 points. This result underscores the competitive nature of the league as teams vie for playoff spots.
Looking Ahead: Dempo's Final League Phase Game
Dempo SC will next face Rajasthan United FC on April 19 in their final league phase match, a crucial encounter that could determine their fate in the top-six race. With momentum on their side, Dempo aim to build on this winning streak and secure a strong finish to the season.
