Dempo SC's Complete Foreign Roster Set for Pivotal IFL Encounter Against Gokulam Kerala
Panaji-based Dempo SC is poised to field its entire complement of six foreign players for the first time in the current Indian Football League (IFL) season. This significant boost comes as the five-time national champions prepare for a crucial Friday fixture against Gokulam Kerala FC at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri. Both clubs are desperately seeking their first win of the campaign after underwhelming starts.
Early Season Struggles for Both Sides
After three matches, Dempo SC has managed only two draws and suffered one defeat, leaving them in seventh position in the ten-team league standings. Similarly, two-time champions Gokulam Kerala FC have accumulated just two points from their opening three games, placing them at the bottom of the table on goal difference. Despite their positions, Dempo coach Samir Naik remains optimistic about his team's prospects.
"We have been performing reasonably well, but certain results haven't gone in our favor," Naik stated during Thursday's pre-match media interaction. "The league is incredibly competitive. The current table illustrates that there is minimal separation between the top and bottom teams. This promises to be an extremely tight competition throughout the season."
Foreign Player Integration and Availability
Dempo's pre-season preparations, which commenced in August, were disrupted by ongoing uncertainties within Indian football. Consequently, five of their foreign signings—Marcus Joseph (Trinidad and Tobago), Aubin Kouakou (Ivory Coast), Jose Moreno (Colombia), Sebastian Gutierrez (Colombia), and Richmond Owusu (Ghana)—joined the squad just before the league's commencement. The sixth foreign player, Argentinian defender Damian Perez, arrived only last week. For the first time this campaign, all six international players are fully fit and available for selection against Gokulam.
"Every team in the IFL is fighting intensely," emphasized Coach Naik. "The league format demands that you secure something positive from every match; otherwise, any team can quickly find themselves in difficulty."
Historical Context and Upcoming Challenges
The previous encounter between these two sides occurred on the final matchday of last season, with Gokulam still in contention for the title. That memorable match produced seven goals, with Dempo emerging as 4-3 victors. Looking ahead, Dempo faces two additional away fixtures before returning home for their final four matches of the season.
"If we aspire to be in the upper half of the league table, we must deliver our absolute best performance," Naik asserted. "This upcoming match will not be straightforward. Our objective is to establish a secure position that allows us to challenge for the championship. However, it is important to remember that we are still in the early stages of the season."
The match is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 PM local time on Friday, with both teams eager to secure three vital points that could kickstart their respective campaigns.
