FC Goa Coach Manolo Marquez Revels in Team Spirit Despite Foreign Player Limit
In Panaji, FC Goa's head coach Manolo Marquez is finding immense satisfaction in his role this season, even as his squad navigates the Indian Super League (ISL) with a notable constraint: only two foreign players. This limitation, often seen as a handicap in the competitive league, hasn't dampened Marquez's enthusiasm. With FC Goa already securing qualification for next season's continental competition as Super Cup winners, the pressure is relatively low, allowing the coach to focus on the positives.
Unbeaten Run and Team Camaraderie
FC Goa stands as one of just two unbeaten teams in the ISL, currently holding sixth place with ten points from six matches. Despite this solid position, Marquez acknowledges the challenges of competing with fewer foreign players, a factor he believes is underestimated by many. "People don't really understand how difficult it is to play with just two foreigners," he remarked. The team has recorded four draws, including against lower-ranked opponents, but Marquez remains upbeat, attributing their resilience to the squad's exceptional group dynamics.
During a pre-match media interaction, Marquez expressed unwavering confidence in his players. "Even if we lost all seven games until the end of season, I will say the same: this group is top," he stated. "You wake up every morning, and you know that you will enjoy the training session. In terms of attitude, these guys are top; they are more friends than teammates." This camaraderie has been a key factor in their performance, though recent draws against Punjab and Chennaiyin have prompted a desire for more wins.
Upcoming Home Games and Bengaluru FC Clash
FC Goa is set to play their next three matches at home, starting with a high-profile encounter against Bengaluru FC at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday. Marquez highlighted the significance of this fixture, noting Bengaluru FC's strength. "We are speaking of a top team, one that consistently has the maximum foreign players in the national team, along with Mohun Bagan. They can qualify for AFC Champions League," he said. Interestingly, FC Goa's winning streak last season began with a 3-0 victory at Fatorda, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the upcoming match.
Bengaluru FC has shown improved form recently, picking up seven points from their last three games. However, this wasn't enough to retain Renedy Singh as chief coach, leading to the appointment of Pep Munoz for the remainder of the season. Munoz, who has experience in Cambodia and China and was part of Barcelona's La Masia academy, is yet to arrive in India, so Renedy will oversee the team for the upcoming game.
Coaching Changes and Strategic Focus
Marquez commented on the coaching shift at Bengaluru FC, acknowledging Munoz's credentials while reflecting on the broader context of opportunities for Indian coaches. "I know Pep Munoz, a top coach, who did really well in Cambodia and China. On the other end, everyone speaks of providing chances to Indian coaches. It is difficult to do better than Renedy," he observed. Regardless of who is in charge, Marquez emphasized that FC Goa's approach will remain consistent. "Whoever is in charge, our approach won't change. We have to focus on ourselves because in the last two games, maybe we focused on the opponent than our own performance."
Renedy Singh, in his final game as interim coach, praised FC Goa's setup and expressed confidence in his team's abilities. "Goa got a good coach and a good setup. They haven't lost a game so far, but if we look at our matches against Inter Kashi, Mohammedan, and Mohun Bagan, we have had a good run and must capitalise on the strengths," he said. "This will be my last game in charge, but I am sure that when Pep comes in, he will implement his own ideas, and the players will adapt."
As the ISL season progresses, FC Goa's blend of team spirit and strategic focus under Marquez's guidance continues to be a compelling narrative, setting the stage for an exciting clash against Bengaluru FC.
