FC Goa Players Show Training Distractions Amid Season Uncertainty
FC Goa's head coach Manolo Marquez has openly discussed observing distracted players during training sessions last week, attributing this to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Indian football. The team has been training consistently for months but has participated in very few competitive matches, creating mental challenges for the squad.
Coach's Two Options for Players
Manolo Marquez, the experienced Spanish coach, revealed his direct approach to addressing the situation. "Every individual reacts differently to situations, but you can't ignore what's happening in Indian football," Manolo told reporters after a training session at Bambolim. The coach gathered his team and presented them with two clear options.
"We speak everyday about the situation," Manolo explained. "I told them we have two options: one, to have pity about a situation we have no control over, and the other is to build a stronger group, compete well and arrive in the best condition for every game."
The coach emphasized that FC Goa has already demonstrated superior physical conditioning during their first two Super Cup matches, where they secured comfortable victories and advanced to the semifinal stage.
Mixed Fortunes in Different Competitions
FC Goa's performance has varied significantly between domestic and international competitions. While they've excelled in the Super Cup with two convincing wins, their journey in the AFC Champions League Two has been challenging.
The team has suffered four consecutive losses in ACL2, though Manolo provides context for these results. "I hear a lot about the four losses but I don't think any team can secure a point against Al-Nassr," he stated, referring to the Saudi Pro League giants.
Manolo adopted a philosophical approach to their international campaign. "Yes, we lost four games, but the reality is that the opponents are stronger than us. We are competitive in most of the games. Like they say, you either win or learn. This experience will be useful for Goa."
Critical Baghdad Clash Ahead
FC Goa faces Al-Zawraa in Baghdad on Wednesday in a crucial AFC Champions League Two encounter. The Iraqi club currently sits second in the group with six points, tied with FC Istiklol and trailing leaders Al-Nassr.
Manolo acknowledged the mathematical possibility of qualification while being realistic about their chances. "We still have a small chance of qualification if we win both games by big margins, but theoretically, it will be between Al Zawraa and Istiklol in terms of goal difference."
The coach anticipates an attacking game in Baghdad. "It will be a game where they will want to score maximum goals, so it will be an open game. There will be spaces to exploit. If our attitude is right, we can have a good game in Baghdad."
When the two teams previously met at Fatorda Stadium, FC Goa delivered an impressive performance despite the 2-0 loss, with the visitors leveraging their experience to secure victory.
Navigating Indian Football's Uncertain Future
The Spanish coach expressed concern about the broader situation affecting Indian football. "It's a very difficult situation for us because in life, and not just football, it's better to have a yes or no, never this question mark. Doubts are difficult to handle."
Despite the challenges, Manolo emphasized the necessity of maintaining positivity. "We don't have an option, we have to be positive, keep going and secure good results."
With domestic football currently at a standstill and the future uncertain, FC Goa's upcoming matches take on added significance as the team seeks to maintain competitive sharpness while awaiting resolution to the broader issues affecting Indian football.
The team's immediate schedule includes the Super Cup semifinal against Mumbai City early next month, followed by their concluding ACL2 group clash on Christmas Eve.
