Gokulam Kerala FC Ends Drought with Convincing 2-0 Victory Over Dempo SC
In a crucial Indian Football League (IFL) encounter at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri on Friday, Gokulam Kerala FC secured their first win of the season, defeating Dempo SC by a score of 2-0. This result marked the end of a frustrating wait for three points for both teams, who had entered the match without a victory after three previous games.
Strategic Changes and Early Dominance
Both sides made significant adjustments to their lineups, with each team implementing four changes in an attempt to reverse their fortunes. Gokulam Kerala, under new head coach Dimitris Dimitriou, adopted an aggressive attacking approach from the outset. This strategy paid dividends as the home side created numerous early opportunities.
The former Churchill Brothers FC duo of Trijoy Dias and Kingslee Fernandes nearly broke the deadlock in the opening minutes. Trijoy delivered a dangerous low cross into the box, but Kingslee was unable to connect cleanly with the ball, squandering a promising chance.
Lalrinzuala Opens the Scoring
Gokulam's persistence was rewarded in the 20th minute when Moses Lalrinzuala showcased individual brilliance to put his team ahead. Skillfully weaving past the Dempo SC defense, Lalrinzuala executed a precise ground shot that beat goalkeeper Ashish Sibi, giving the hosts a well-deserved lead.
The home side continued to press forward and came close to doubling their advantage just after the half-hour mark. Thabiso Brown's powerful header struck the crossbar, denying Gokulam a second goal before halftime.
Penalty Drama and Missed Opportunities
The second half saw increased drama when Gokulam was awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute. Kingslee Fernandes provided an excellent through ball to Thabiso Brown, who was brought down inside the penalty area by Dempo's Ashish Sibi. Brown stepped up to take the spot kick, but Ashish redeemed himself with a crucial save, keeping his team in the contest.
Dempo SC had their own chance to equalize when Marcus attempted a long-range effort, but Gokulam goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil made a comfortable save to maintain his team's lead. Dempo had another fortunate escape when Ashish blocked Brown's fierce close-range shot, with Trijoy's rebound effort sailing over the crossbar.
Kasimov Seals the Victory
As the match entered its final quarter, Dempo coach Samir Naik utilized all five substitutions in search of an equalizer. However, his efforts proved futile as Gokulam extended their lead in the 83rd minute. Dempo center-back Aubin Kouako fouled Mirjalol Kasimov inside the penalty area, resulting in another penalty for the home side.
Captain Mirjalol Kasimov calmly converted the spot kick, sending Ashish the wrong way and securing a 2-0 victory for Gokulam Kerala FC. This goal effectively sealed the match and provided the home team with their first three points of the IFL season.
League Standings and Future Fixtures
With this victory, Gokulam Kerala FC climbed from the bottom of the table to fifth position, now having accumulated five points from four matches. Meanwhile, Dempo SC dropped to tenth place with just two points from their four games.
Looking ahead, Dempo SC faces Sreenidi Deccan FC on Wednesday in their final away fixture of the season. The former five-time champions will then hope to capitalize on their remaining four matches, all of which will be played at home. Dempo's objective remains to finish in the top five and maintain their chances of challenging for the IFL title.
For Gokulam Kerala FC, this victory provides crucial momentum as they seek to build on their improved league position and continue their ascent up the IFL standings.
