Countdown Begins for 26th Kodava Family Hockey Festival in Napoklu

The stage is set for the 26th annual Kodava Family Hockey Namme, with the prestigious event scheduled to commence on April 5 in Napoklu. This year's festival will be hosted by the esteemed Chenanda family, marking a significant moment for the local community and hockey enthusiasts across the region.

A Festival of Records and Legacy

Renowned globally, the Kodava family hockey festival holds a distinguished place in both the Guinness Book of Records and the World Book of Records, celebrating its rich heritage and competitive spirit. This edition marks the sixth time that Napoklu has had the honor of hosting the event, continuing a tradition that has seen previous successful editions such as the Kaliyanda Cup in 2003, Biddatanda Cup in 2017, Kulletira Cup in 2018, Appachettolanda Cup in 2023, and Kundyolada Cup in 2024. Notably, the 2025 Muddanda Cup was held in Madikeri, showcasing the festival's widespread appeal.

Preparations in Full Swing

Preparations are advancing rapidly at the Napoklu venue, where extensive ground levelling work is underway to ensure optimal playing conditions. A massive gallery is being constructed with the capacity to seat approximately 30,000 spectators, a project that has engaged experts from Calicut to guarantee structural integrity and comfort. This infrastructure upgrade aims to enhance the spectator experience and accommodate the large crowds expected for the tournament.

Theme and Community Initiatives

The Chenanda family has introduced an inspiring theme for this year's festival: 'One Goal, One Plant', emphasizing unity and environmental consciousness. In addition to the main tournament, organizers will conduct a special hockey competition for primary and high school teams within the district, fostering youth participation and talent development. So far, an impressive 240 Kodava families have registered for the event, with registration accepted at 34 centers across the district and online. The deadline for entries has been extended to March 20, allowing more participants to join.

Expanding Participation and Venues

Women's hockey is gaining prominence, with over 30 teams already registered, highlighting the growing inclusivity of the festival. Tournament fixtures will be finalized after March 23, ensuring a well-organized schedule. The primary venue will be the General Thimayya Stadium at Cheriyaparambu, Napoklu, with matches spread across a total of four grounds to facilitate simultaneous play and maximize engagement.

Festival Activities and Support

Beyond the competitive matches, the festival will feature a diverse array of activities, including:

  • A comprehensive training camp for aspiring players
  • A cultural dance balopat camp to celebrate local traditions
  • A marathon and 4x100 family relay for community involvement
  • Coaching sessions for selected students to nurture future talent

Organizers plan to invite Olympians from the district, adding star power and inspiration to the events. Technical support is being provided by key organizations such as the Kodava Hockey Academy, Hockey Coorg, Hockey Karnataka, and the Referees' Association, ensuring high standards of play and officiating.

Opening Day Festivities

On the opening day, attendees can look forward to a vibrant cultural procession, an exhibition match to kick off the tournament, and a series of cultural programs. Festival committee working president Deenna Chengappa confirmed these plans, underscoring the blend of sport and culture that defines the Kodava Family Hockey Namme. This event not only promotes hockey but also strengthens community bonds and celebrates the unique heritage of the Kodava people.
