Sreejesh Slams Hockey India for Removal as U21 Coach, Says Contract Over
Sreejesh Slams Hockey India Over U21 Coach Removal

Legendary Indian hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has strongly criticized Hockey India (HI) for his removal as the head coach of the men's U-21 national team. In a statement released on Thursday, Sreejesh clarified that his contract with HI had officially ended, contradicting claims that he was unceremoniously sacked.

Sreejesh's Reaction to Removal

Sreejesh expressed disappointment over the manner in which his tenure ended. He stated that he was not given a proper explanation for the decision and that the federation lacked transparency. The former goalkeeper, who retired after the 2024 Paris Olympics, had been appointed as the U-21 coach in early 2025.

"My contract was officially over, and I was not removed arbitrarily. However, the way Hockey India handled the communication was unprofessional. There was no clarity on the process or future plans," Sreejesh said in a press conference.

Contract Details and Timeline

Sreejesh's contract was for a fixed term ending in April 2026. He was informed of the non-renewal two months before the expiry. Despite his contributions to Indian hockey, including leading the junior team to a bronze medal in the Junior Asia Cup, HI decided not to extend his tenure.

"I had hoped to continue developing young talent, but the federation had other plans. I respect their decision, but I expect better communication and respect for former players," he added.

Hockey India's Response

Hockey India officials have remained silent on the issue, with no official statement released so far. Sources within the federation suggest that they are looking for a coach with more experience in age-group hockey. However, Sreejesh's achievements with the junior team were widely appreciated by fans and experts.

The controversy has sparked a debate about the treatment of former players in Indian sports administration. Many have come out in support of Sreejesh, calling for more dignified handling of legendary athletes.

Future Plans

Sreejesh, who is also a mentor for the senior team, has not ruled out a return to coaching. He plans to take a break and focus on his foundation, which works towards grassroots hockey development. "I will always be available for Indian hockey, but the decision to step back was not mine alone," he concluded.

The incident adds to a series of controversies involving Hockey India and former players, raising questions about governance in the sport.
