Mitchell McClenaghan Advocates for MS Dhoni as Impact Player in CSK vs KKR Clash
Former New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan has put forward a strategic recommendation for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of their Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday. McClenaghan emphasized that if MS Dhoni is fit, CSK should utilize him as an impact player to maximize his batting abilities, particularly in high-pressure chasing scenarios.
Strategic Batting Boost for CSK
In a discussion on JioStar, McClenaghan elaborated on his suggestion, stating, "If MS Dhoni is fit, then CSK should bring him in as the impact player. If the team management feels they need a short burst of runs from him, especially when they are chasing, then bringing him in as the impact sub will allow them to make the best use of his batting abilities." He highlighted that this role could reduce the physical demands on Dhoni, allowing him to focus on aggressive stroke-making. "Playing as an impact player will mean he may not have to do a lot of running. He can just come in, smack the ball into the stands and do his job of finishing in style. His aggressive stroke-making ability will come in handy for Chennai when they are chasing big scores. I think that is a good way to get Dhoni back into the groove. His presence will really give a lot of strength to the lower middle order of CSK," McClenaghan added.
CSK's Recent Form and Dhoni's Fitness Status
CSK enters this match following their first victory of the season against the Delhi Capitals, which was secured through an all-round performance. Key contributions included Sanju Samson's explosive 115 off 56 balls and a disciplined bowling effort, with Dewald Brevis returning from injury to bolster the bowling attack and help defend a total of 212 runs.
However, Dhoni's participation remains uncertain. According to ESPNcricinfo, he had a brief batting session in the nets before the KKR match at Chepauk but is still unlikely to play. The 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has missed all four of CSK's matches this season due to a calf strain and is expected to sit out the fifth as well. CSK had announced on March 28 that Dhoni would miss the first two weeks of the season for rehabilitation, but he has not yet demonstrated match readiness.
In training, Dhoni has faced only throwdowns, primarily from batting coach and former teammate Michael Hussey, without batting at full intensity or engaging in wicketkeeping practice. He has also not traveled with the team for away matches this season, indicating ongoing recovery efforts.
Dhoni's IPL Legacy and Recent Performance
MS Dhoni boasts an impressive IPL career, having scored 5,439 runs in 242 innings across 278 matches, with an average of 38.30 and a strike rate of 137.45. His record includes 24 half-centuries and a highest score of 84*, making him the sixth-highest run-scorer in tournament history. In the previous season, when CSK finished at the bottom of the table, Dhoni contributed 196 runs in 13 innings, averaging 24.50 with a strike rate over 135, though his highest score was only 30.
As CSK prepares for their upcoming match, McClenaghan's suggestion underscores the potential tactical advantage of deploying Dhoni as an impact player, should his fitness permit, to enhance the team's batting depth and finishing capabilities.
