Coimbatore: Minister for Public Works, Highways and Sports Development, Aadhav Arjuna, conducted a thorough inspection of various sports facilities at the Nehru Stadium in the city on Sunday. Following the inspection, he highlighted that the upgraded stadium now has the capacity to accommodate 32,000 spectators simultaneously. The facility features a synthetic track, a football ground, a gymnastics arena, and an air-conditioned gymnasium, all designed to help athletes hone their skills effectively.
New Training Programs Announced
The minister announced the introduction of new training programs for fencing (with five students) and road biking (also five students) at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) sports hostel in the district. Additionally, the total strength of residential student-athletes at the hostel has been increased from 60 to 75, providing more opportunities for young sports enthusiasts.
State-of-the-Art Hostel Under Construction
Aadhav Arjuna also inspected the new sports hostel building, which is currently under construction near the semi-indoor basketball court. The project is estimated to cost Rs 7.95 crore. This modern facility will include a study room, a gymnasium, a recreation room, and a visitor's lounge. The minister strictly instructed officials to ensure that the construction is of high quality and completed within the stipulated timeline.
Interaction with Athletes
During his visit, the minister interacted with athletes training in various disciplines and inquired about their requirements. He extended his best wishes for them to achieve major milestones and become sporting champions. The inspection was attended by several officials, including Sajjan Singh R Chavan, Government Secretary of Youth Welfare and Sports Development; J Meghanatha Reddy, Member Secretary of SDAT; Coimbatore District Collector Pavan Kumar G Giriyappanavar; and Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran.
This development marks a significant step forward for sports infrastructure in Coimbatore, aiming to nurture talent and promote excellence in athletics.
