Portugal confirm Roberto Martinez's departure after World Cup exit

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially confirmed the departure of national team coach Roberto Martinez following the expiry of his contract. The announcement comes after Portugal's exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026, which ended with a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16.

FPF statement on Martinez's departure

In a statement released on Wednesday, the FPF said, "The Portuguese Football Federation informs that the contractual relationship with the National Coach, Roberto Martinez, and his technical team has officially ended this Wednesday." The federation expressed gratitude for Martinez's dedication and professionalism during his three-and-a-half-year tenure, highlighting the UEFA Nations League title won in 2025. The FPF added, "The president of the Portuguese Football Federation is already working on hiring the future National Coach, with the aim of continuing to promote the ambition and culture of victory."

Martinez confirms end of cycle

Following the World Cup exit, Martinez himself confirmed his departure, stating that it was time for a new voice. "It is the end of the cycle. It is important to have a new voice, a new leader," Martinez said, as quoted by The Athletic. He noted that his goal was to win the World Cup, and since that was not achieved, it did not make sense to continue. Martinez described his tenure as "the experience of my life" and expressed hope that Portugal would remember his time positively.

Impact and search for successor

Martinez took over as Portugal coach in 2023, succeeding Fernando Santos. Under his leadership, Portugal won the 2025 UEFA Nations League, defeating the Netherlands in the final. The FPF is now actively seeking a new head coach to lead the national team into future competitions, aiming to maintain a winning culture.
